Default Very old split and cracked and knotholed Red Gum

When I was at the Maleny Wood Expo last month, I bought some very old Red Gum timber, without looking really closely at it. The price was very cheap ($10 for two lengths of it), so I wasn't particularly too worried. Later upon looking closely it was full of splits and cracks and knotholes. I thought this will be a challenge. I glued and clamped all the splits and cracks and left the knotholes in it. I thought they added a lot of character.

    This is the result. (box is 300mm x 185mm x 100mm)

I love beautiful, quietly elegant boxes. Even more so when they are red gum! Great result, Paul.

How thick is the timber you used for the tray - and do you make the ring runs yourself? Foam over thin ply?

Hi Brian, and thanks for your kind comments. I make all my trays with 8mm sides. Nice and sturdy. The ring holders I make myself. I've tried a few different methods but I find this one by far the best. I buy these from ebay, this is the mob I bought from

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/10pcs-Bendy-Magic-Flexible-Hair-Headdress-Foam-Flex-Rods-Curlers-Rollers/152585290792?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=452002479844&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

6 packets of these arrived yesterday. Always buy the 20mm ones. For this particular box I make my dividers for the ring section 70mm apart. Then you might notice in my photos I then make another small 5mm wide scalloped piece of timber and its glued next to the main dividers. It's scalloped to allow the ring holders to slide up under it, then you don't see any tacky ends of the ring holders. Those ring holders are cut 68mm and covered with double velvet, or whatever fabric your using. I use a hot melt glue gun for the gluing of the fabric to the rubber. The seam with the glue is on the bottom hence you never see that.

All excess fabric is trimmed off with scissors. You don't need the stick the ring holders to the box, they are neatly tucked under the scalloped timber and certainly don't go anywhere. This leaves me with 60mm wide ring compartment which is more than adequate for two rings per section. As to how many sections you can fit into your tray depends on the width of the tray. You need multiples of 22 to 22.5mm per holder. That lifter in the middle was made to cater for that. At times you need a false piece of timber at the ends of the ring compartments to get this measurement correct.

Certainly no worms or cracks show in the photos so if you didn't tell us we would just think it is another one of your masterpieces with no blemishes. Great idea putting those scalloped pieces over the ends to keep them hidden.
Your link to the rollers doesn't seem to work but are these the rollers you tried to link to?

Hi Dallas, just home from a morning on the bowling green. Yes thats the ones I am talking about. With my link if you copy and paste it, it works ok for me, but glad you found it anyway.

Yes those scalloped pieces was a nice little idea to make the ring holders look all nice and neat and soft. Just a matter of getting the measurements correct for them, but that applies to everything I guess.

    Hi Paul,

Thanks for the detailed instructions for the ring rolls. I like the idea of the scalloped ‘keeper’ at either end of the rolls. I’ll give it a go next time I make some!

    Thanks again,

    Brian
