The tray is finished without the inserts, just got to make the ring inserts.

The inside is finished, with 3/4 coats. I felt The more the better as it makes the lid stand out when open.

I used ear plugs to stop the oil filling the hing holes so that the epoxy will take.
now I have 2nd coat on outside, tomorrow will buff out before applying the 3rd coat.

Sorry it wasn't the best light so looks quite dull, but is far from it in the sunlight.

    stay tuned.

You say you plugged the holes so the oil doesn't get in and the epoxy will take. Don't the hinges you are using have a screw to make them expand into the hole rather than gluing?

No, these are a different type, 5mm and no screws.

Finish is now curing but I had to post this video, so bare with me if it doesn't show up.

its mesmerising, although I might have to get the wife to re-do.

no, not working. I'll have to figure out how to attach a video. Other than via a URL link.

    apologies.

anyway, I'll give it a few days to cure before reconstruction and gluing the hinges in.

That's something to be very proud of. I hope I can achieve one as spectacular one day.
I take it you couldn't get the video thing happening

Very impressive. I think I'll have a go at something similar. Thanks for the WIP. It's been very enjoyable.

    cheers,

Thanks AJ, the only advice I can give is when you glue the segments together the length of them is irrelevant unless your making a table top. its the 'tips' that count. Also put the 2 wedges together tape over the top, then fold back and sand flush, the 2 will then join perfectly. then do the same with joining the 2 lots of 2 etc.

I too will be making another one, and another with variations (but cant say too much).

I am also going to do a box combining Nthrn and Sthrn Silk oak, but am struggling for 1.design, and 2. what to name her.

this one was easy "starburst', but nth/sth not so easy. and no its not State of Origin.......... sorry to disappoint all you league followers

    Great box, Fumbler

Thanks for taking the trouble to show the build along the way.

Touche, brother Brian, your Rock Maple WIP was also stunning, the inlay was fantastic, something I am yet to master, and if someone can't make a box after reading your and my stages presentations then they should stick to watching re-runs of 90210. hahahaha, I am now looking forward to my next build.
