All finished.
I started this job to tryout a cross dovetail dovetail key I had been experimenting with and got carried away and built a box.
And I did not do the keys in the end as I think the box looks busy enough with the hardwood banding. Another project?
Not my best work as it was not started to be a finished project.
I also was trying out various methods for thin ripping, micro tongue and grooving and of course coopering. I researched the lid coopering a lot and had a few goes with scrap before the lid you see. I really like the rounded lid and would like to do it again on something else. As expected I learnt a lot from the exercise and think the next one should be better.
A lot of the jointing could be better and would be if I had some better tools and more patience. I would love to do long miters without resorting to the drop saw, like a big 45 deg router cutter so I could cross router joints.
Anyway I hope it is a presentable box for my lady who has been asking for one for ages, hope she puts it to good use.

I think it has come out really nice. I agree that if you had of used the keys it would make it too busy.
You look like you got the hinges sitting really well. I made a box just recently using the cheaper hinges which are also slightly under the 6mm and didn't have a router bit to suit them. Rather than using an undersize bit amd packing out I modified a cheap 6mm bit with a diamond file and got it down to the required size. When I cut the slots I just used marks on the fence to stop at for length, but unfortunately one mark was about 1/2mm out so my slot was slightly too long in 2 places, one the the body and one in the lid. Didn't realise until it was too late. Next time I will set up stops and do lots of test cuts.
This has been a good build to follow for us newbies so thanks for the journey.Dallas

Resurrecting an old thread here.
If you look at the clasp latch thing on the front of the box you may see what I am talking about. I searched high and low for that type of latch as I had seen it used before and it looked quite good.
In actual use it has not performed as well as I would like. the latch is made of very cheap thin material and deforms easily with use and I am disappointed with as the box itself is in constant used and loved by SO.

Here is a picture of the type of latch I used, you can see the back is hollow resulting in a pretty weak item.
On another box I have seen a similar latch that is solid and well made.
My question is where can I source a good well made one from???

I can't help you with a specific source for what you're looking for but a quick image search on Google brought these up - brass small box latches - Google Search
The prices of some of the better looking solid brass ones are eye watering, but if you have a good troll you might find what you're looking for. Aliexpress is another possibility.
Quite a few of the solid ones you see will be brass plated zinc alloy rather than solid brass.

Well googling found plenty of cheap ones alright.
You're right about eye watering prices for solid ones like, $36 for >
