    Default Best substrate for veneering?

Hello, for arguments sake, say you are going to make a jewellery box with a veneered lid 300 x 200 (A4) size lid.

What would be the best substrate for this type of lid, ( marine ply, MDF, whatever)and what would the recommended thickness be - 6mm , 12 mm, 15mm whatever, that will fit neatly in a rebate around the top of the box sides ?

All comments and suggestions are most welcome
    regards,

I've used 6mm MDF successfully, also similar thickness ply.

plus are your veneers sliced (i.e. <1mm thick) or sawn (which would make them around 3mm thick)?
if sawn you may wish to consider making your own built up panel.

hi ian, I am using commercial sliced veneers for a test run, and after further reading and trawling the Internet, I am inclined to use MDF substrate as there is no grain or cracks ( as in plywood) that would be telegraphed through the 0.6mm thick veneer.

If making my own veneers, I would cut them to 2mm or so, then glue them on to marine plywood substrate, and then possibly running them through a drum sander to get them down to 1mm thick on either side of the substrate to avoid any seasonal movement of the timber.

Does anyone know where I might get water resistant HMR MDF? That sounds even better to use, and is recommended by Briggs Veneers

    Dengy,

Give bootle a call and ask them. From memory when I went there last year they stocked mdf so they may stock what you are after. Or there is a kitchen/bathroom centre that stocked ply and mdf that you could also try in Garbutt I think from memory?

Thanks Andy, yes, Bootle and the Big Hammer had some, as did Jones Ezy Cut over in Garbutt. Many thanks for your help.

Have you got a heater in your workshop yet?

I'd go for MDF over ply for stability.
