Default Suggestions for a nice brown timber?

Hello, I have been asked to make a box for a friend, and her preference was for a brown timber with nice grain, rather than reddish timber. And she wants the lid and the box sides of the same timber.

Can anyone please suggest some suitable timbers?
    regards,

    Dengy

I second Kuffy with blackwood, but I also like US walnut.

Old Jarrah tends to be much more brown than red. Might not be that easy to get hold of in NQLD.

The really old stuff goes near black when its oiled.

Old Merbau/Kwila that I have is very brownish, and may be easy to get up your way.

One more vote for Blackwood or Walnut. I do really love Blackwood though. So multi-dimensional; such a variety of grain and colour (but still within the brown spectrum-is that even a thing lol?). You can get nice straight grain, or straight with fiddleback or completely marbled etc. I just picked up a nice figured piece yesterday (apologies for re-posting same pic!).

    Or go something more plain;

Coincidentally I just started making a simple blackwood and tassie oak box yesterday morning to keep up with dovetail practise. I love the stuff.

Seems that she is asking for nice grain as well as brown colour. My thoughts go to Tassie Blackwood, US Walnut or possibly even Zebrano.

    Regards,

    Rob

If its a solid colour throughout you are looking for then i would say Beefwood.

Have a look at Qld coachwood for a lighter brown. It can have a nice grain, depending on how it's cut.

Burdekin Plum - there was a recent post in the market place from a seller in the Whitsundays area.

Budgeroo, Brigalow, Dead Finish, Lancewood, or if you want a nice rich chocolate try the street tree "Leopardtree" (Libidibia ferrea formerly Caesalpinia ferrea)

I once had some Mulberry that was say Bournville Cocoa brown but probably difficult to come by. Spotty gum can be various shades of brown and Purple Heart belies its name by turning brown over time. Walnut comes to mind also.

...I still can't get over Darrel Lea discontinuing the 'Walnut Roll'
