Thanks Cisco. The finish used was a turps based sanding sealer followed by several coats of a Scandinavian oil applyed by rubbing it on the timber.
Cheers

Hi Bruce,
Got a Ryobi Trimmer TR50A for a song at $12 fom a garage sale....bla bla bla, I already had the bit the only thing still that I'm not sure of is the mortise for the stay is cut using the drill press Can you tell me how (it might be a stupid question to some)?
Thanks

The only stupid question is an unasked one . I use the drill press with a fence set up to drill a series of overlapping holes the width and depth required for the stay to function . Just make sure the drill is smaller than the width of the hinge leg and the holes aren't too close to the screw location for the hinge . Did you get a template bush with the trimmer ?
Cheers Bruce

Hi Jack ,
if all else fails you could make a false base plate to accept an aftermarket guide bush !
