    Default Tape test

Not sure how many of you out there use tape and which tape you use. I started with Blue painters tape but found they lifted the grain slightly and there were splinters on the tape after removal. So then I tried Gold rape, slightly less adhesion but still found it was too strong for finishes, (due to a small disaster, that took several months to fix). Although thinking about it I think the finish hadn't cured fully so my fault. Anyhow I then found the green low tack low adhesion tape and it is now my go to tape.

here's where things now get interesting. I was running extremely low so off to the hardware store I popped after dropping the kids off at school. I couldn't find the tape I had before but something very similar, so I asked at the counter if this was the same stuff, and she said yes, it's just been repackaged, but we also have this other stuff and pointed to an el-cheapo brand, and she wasn't kidding. My usual tape is nearly $12 a roll and I use it like it's going out of fashion, this other stuff, $1.15 a roll, ok so it's only 18mmx25m vs the good stuff 24mmx50m, but when u calculate $2.30 for 50m vs $12 for 50m, you can't compare.

i know you only get what you pay for so hence me doing the test

here is a piece of Nthn Silky oak, prone to pulling from tape, and with the 3 pieces on.

In the pic are the 3 pieces, the green band at the top is the cheap brand, the bottom left tape is the $12 brand and the typical blue painters tape.

i will let everybody know the results and where to get it if it's successful, because if it is, I'm off to buy a box of the stuff.

    results soon.

my experience is that the glue on 3M brand blue tape is different to the glue used on other blue tape.
I don't think I've ever had fibers lift with 3M tape, but the "problem" is common with other brands and colours.

good luck with the el cheapo tape

Thanks WP, but i'm not looking for a better brand, i'm looking for a cheaper alternative and try to save some $....... $2 is much better than $12. So hopefully, the heap brand holds up.
