Default Tasmanian Blackwood Box with Tumbing Block Lid Insert

Hi all, Well my first box since last October. Had a lot going on. All started with our trip to NZ end of October for about 7 weeks, then I had to have a hernia operation after getting home, (op January). Then I had this other health issue which was giving me huge grief, after a few doctors visits and a heap of blood tests, he worked out what it was. So now more tabs, thats life,......but at least I can now get back into my shed as of about a week and a half ago. And get into some more boxes.

I actually made the lid for this box not long after getting back from NZ mid December, before things started to go wrong. I'ts been sitting on my benchtop since. I thought if the lid doesnt turn out right, I wont worry about a box for it. I was happy with the lid, (a lot work of in making those tumbling blocks individually then glueing etc),....and I made a panel frame lid for them, my first attempt at one of those, I usually just go with the mitre frame lid.

The lining fabric is a velvet/suede, not sure exactly which but lovely and soft and easy to work with, I pad it underneath with wadding used in ladies patchwork.

My own home made Danish Oil, then wax, after being sanded up to 2000 grit.

Very nice Paul - the lid looks exquisite You can tell that many hours of work went into that lid pattern.

Is the front of the box Blackwood too? It kind of looks like Myrtle.

Glad to hear you're up and running Paul. Very eye catching box. You don't perchance have 1950's tiles on your bathroom floor? The pattern in the lid is very reminiscent for me, probably because there have been occasions when I've had the time to study those tiles closely.

Another fabulous box Paul. Always got new ideas and put them together perfectly. I made a tray with that block pattern so I know how much work has gone into that lid.
Glad to hear the health is now on the way up and you can get back to producing your masterpieces.

Thanks chaps. Interesting point about the "myrtle". I bought a lot of timber down in Tassie about 2 years ago now. This lot was in a bundle all marked as Blackwood. The more I sanded that piece the more fiddle back come into it. I've also got some Tassie Myrtle, but this piece doesn't seem to have that myrtle pink about it.

And Dave, my bathroom floor has black and white square tiles, hmmm, wonder how they would look,..!. The pieces I used for those tiles were blackwood, rosewood and queensland beech. Each piece is a parrallelogram. Took a bit of playing around to get the angle right, from memory I think it was 22.5 degrees.

And thanks for your kind comments Dallas, yes it is good to be back into my shed again.

Great box, Paul. A LOT of work there, but worth it for the result. Impressive work on the top; I’ve been helping someone at the Men’s Shed make a box from small squares so I can appreciate all your careful work.

Glad you’re back in the workshop - its a therapy all of its own, isn’t it?

    keep well,

    Brian

Hi Brian, yes it sure is a therapy on its own. Just being able to rip up some timber works wonder, I couldnt even do that a couple of weeks ago. Initially I thought this lid might be just a once off,,...but now I am thinking I might do more. Means preparing a heap of timber in order to cut out the little blocks, then a lot of glueing. Something one could be doing whilst working on another box or two, just making the blocks over time. A couple of months ago I sent away and bought some plans for a complete box made fully of a similar design. I put it away for later on, and will get that out and see what I can come up with down the track a bit.
