Thank you box Finished
Well it's finally done, it's not perfect, but not a bad effort for my first ever box!!
as noted before the timbers used are Silky Oak carcass, Honduran rosewood top, with a triple strip band of Purfling containing Ebony, and a pale unknown timber. The base is African Wenge, with a Blackwood lip. Also Gold JB Fountain pen dressed in Blackwood. All timbers which were given to me gratis.
Also a big thanks to all forumites who gave me pointers and help answering some of my silly questions along the way.
Finish is about 6 or 7 (I lost count) coats of gloss wipe on poly.
Anyway I hope he enjoys it as much as I enjoyed making it.

FANTASTIC .... ABSOLUTELY.
It is wonderful that the inside of thew box is just as well finished as the exterior
I'm sure it will be treasured

Very nice box, congratulations Fumbler, pretty good for a first effort. The timber choice is excellent.
A couple of suggestions for your next box:
1. Make the box sides thinner, say 10 or 12 mm
2. Don't waste beautiful timber on a base that will never be seen. Suggest good quality plywood instead.
3. A nice simple finger lift for the lid would go well, or even a small rounded recess on the box lid / sides joint line
Looking forward to seeing your next effortregards,
Dengy

Dengue, thank you for those kind words. Please let me explain the use of the timbers, all of it was given to me by a work colleague, and although it does seem a waste to put the Wenge where it won't be seen, I couldn't figure out how to incorporate it into the build. The sides are actually 12mm but will endeavour to make smaller. As for the finger slot, I completely forgot but now can't due to the magnets inset (which are redundant as it's a snug fit onto the inner band.
i should rename myself, the fiddler, not fumbler as I have to make some adjustments due to a wee accident, that being the box not opening fully. So in my haste I taped her up, threw it on the router table and carefully fixed the 45degree angle at the back. It wasn't completely to half way and as such wouldn't open fully. And although that part was a success, the tape peeled a small spot of finish from the lid so I am now refinishing the top.
I've turned 2 small knobs, either of which I am thinking about retro-fitting. So I will drill a small hole to fit and shouldn't detract from the effect of the front of the box. I haven't done it yet and am just toying with the idea.
thanks.
