Default Thinking outside the box #2

    Hi Guys,
I have been working on this box for the better part of a year. It took me 3 months just to find Ebony boards wide enough to make this pool cue case! I was asked to make this out of solid Ebony and Ivory with a real fur interior. Before you say anything, here in the States Ivory is banned so I used a synthetic material that looks pretty close to the real thing but it does not like power tools. It gets soft when heated. Ended up being a real pain to work with. The interior is beaver from Madison Ave Furriers in New York. If you are getting the idea this costs a lot just for the materials your right!!
I finished this off with hand rubbed lacquer and chrome hardware. I almost forgot to mention around the fake Ivory I added a boarder of sterling silver wire.
I hope you like it because you'll never see another one like this!

That's a beautiful box, but it's a pity, I think the hardware (locks, handle) aren't up to the quality of the rest. I suspect it wouldn't be possible to get equivalent quality unless you made them yourself.

The hardware was chosen by my customer.

I suspect that it's not possible to buy better looking hardware, which is a shame. IMHO, it detracts from the box.

    Lovely box, Bill.

A couple of rhodium plated locks from smartboxmaker.com would look great on this, along with a swing-up timber handle. On the other hand, the customer is always right

Please feel free to show me the hardware you would recommend. Here in the States we have access to a wide selection but to be honest, most of them are very cheaply made and don't look that nice.

    Hi Brian,
I've seen the Smartboxmaker's hardware and it is very nice. But in this case the customer does not want a key lock. too afraid he might lose it I guess! So what is a swing-up timber handle? The handle I have been using is from an amplifier company and is able to handle the weight of my heavy cases and I never worry about them breaking. Plus I can get them in chrome or gold finish.
    Thanks,
    Bill

That's also the case here, unfortunately. As I say, short of having it custom made, it's probably not possible to find hardware that's up to the quality of the cabinetry.

    Bill,

For a non-locking case latch I like the ones on my Zero Halliburton case. You can buy the directly from ZH or here’s an eBay link:

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/Replacement...-/252568704026

Andrew Crawfor has a high quality rhodium plated box/case lock at:

box lock smartLock | smartBoxmaker smartLock, box locks, brass lock, lock

Another decent case lock maker is Abbey England:

Liston Locks & Fittings | Abbey England > Store

For handles, have a look at Adam Hall:

    Regards,

    Brian
