    Default Veneered Jewellery Box

My daughter asked me to make her a jewellery box so here goes. I have a lifetime of veneers so figured it’s a good opportunity to practise some veneering [emoji3].

She likes light / white timber so she settled on that stash of birds-eye maple veneer I have lying around. I will attempt to give it a white wash once applied to the box, not sure how yet but we’ll figure that out when the time comes.

I made a quick box today using some 12mm plywood. I intend to finish the box, with its 2 drawers and then wrap the entire thing with the veneer, including the exposed edges once I cut off the lid.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a entry level veneering vacuum bag kit in either New Zealand or Australia?

A little progress on the box this weekend. I ended up just clamping the veneer down which seemed to work just fine.

Hi Lyle, yes and I quite like it. Will probably end up getting one as I’m sure it beats clamping between cauls, especially for curved surfaces.

Birdseye Maple. I’m planning to give it a white wash after so should turn out quite unique.

I have used an Ezivac for 6 or 7 years - works really well. I prefer to get bags by the roll rather than individually - slightly cheaper, but far more versatile. Bags can be reused.
Ezivac - Quality Italian made Vacuum Packing System | Nature's Wonderland

    I use mine as follows:
    • As timber and veneer press,
    • In kitchen as food/freezer vacuum press,
    • Before travelling, vacuum pack clothes keeps things fresh and pressed and halves packing volume.

    It is a versatile gadget!

    Hi Jacques,

+1 for the Roarocket for small jobs. I replaced their sticky sealant strip with a C clamp strip (electrical conduit), evacuated the bag with my shop vac first then used the hand pump provided.

i still prefer a vacuum pump that shuts off then kicks back in if their is loss of pressure e.g.imperfect bag closure or pinhole, but difficult to justify if you only use a vacuum bag occasionally.

if you haven’t used a vacuum bag setup before it’s worth doing a bit of reading - especially about the dangers of vacuum pressing hollow items.

Here’s a curved top (work in progress) bent over a high density polystyrene former in a Roarocket bag:

    Watching with great interest 😊

    Best regards,

    Hi Brian

I used to think that, but then I discovered the food vacuum press.

After it creates the vacuum it automatically heat seals the bag permanently. Very, very few failures. And you can manually ben and twist stuff after it is vacuum sealed.

At Christmas I cleaned out the freezer and found stuff dated up to seven years old - the vacuum seals were still perfect!

    Hi Graeme,

Thanks for that. Looks like I’m going to be investigating the Ezivac!

Some progress for the weekend. All surfaces veneered and the lid chopped off.

I also put the first coat of white wash on which made the yellowish maple nice and light, quite a refreshing modern look. I will add a few more coats once this one is dry.

    Hi Brian

For me, its one of those "I wish I had done this years ago" issues. Minimal learing curve, and it just works better.

If you do follow this route, I am not pushing the Ezivac brand - it is fine, but there are others.

However, may I suggest that you go to a hospitality supplier, rather than a discounter. Most of their customers are chefs and restaurateurs and they have learned not to sell crap products to irate chefs! And they stock better bag material - critical. Little $$$ differences.

Out of curiosity - what supplier & grade of 12mm ply are you using as the foundation?
