WA blackbutt box
My valued and faithful Gifkins Dovetail Jig lives in my shed in a black plastic crate. It shares its home with any other routing related equipment that will also fit in the crate.
But not any more! I've made a wooden box from Western Australian blackbutt to house the jig and all the other bits and pieces associated with the jig. And, of course, I used the jig to make the box. The box is finished with one coat of linseed oil and one coat of a mixture of 1:1:1 - linseed oil, turps and polyurethane varnish.

Wow!! That's way too organised, if I had it all in the same drawer it would be a minor miracle! Very nice work. Just don't let the missus or offspring see it or it will be either turned to another purpose OR the orders for non-paying family jobs will start pouring in.

Well done, beautiful timber. Can you please give us an idea of the measurements? Also, how does the lid lift work?
Now you have to store that in a big plastic box so it will not get scratchedregards,
Dengy

Thanks and answers
Thanks for your kind and generous words, fellow box makers.
To answer a few questions:
The box is 660mm x 370mm x 190mm high. Those among you with a Gifkins Jig with know 190mm is a "sweet" board width for balanced dovetail layout using the B10 template. The major partitions were cut to fit the jig, bases, paper shims and PDF waste boards. The little cubicles on the right were made to hold the bits, spacers and other bits and pieces that give the jig more functions.
The lid sits proud at the front about 8mm and is flush at the rear and both sides. I did this to give my fingers somewhere to engage with the lid. The lid about 18mm thick and is of mitred frame and panel construction with reinforcing splines at each corner. The little triangular piece of wood on the front face was applied to bring the lid flush with the front, with the view to attach a hasp and staple or a catch in the future. I’m still looking for a suitable hardware to match the handles. The hinges are brass 38mm, probably a little small (50mm black iron would have been nice) but it is what I had at hand.
As to my wife or kids wanting the box, there was a cunning plan here too. My wife thinks it is pretty enough to have in the house and the box is currently in the house, not in the shed/garage with most of my other gear. As one real or fictitious dictator claimed, “Today the shed, tomorrow the spare room!” The partitions could be removed (once I’m gone and my tools have been sold off at garage sale prices ) and the box could be re-purposed. The partitions are just a press fit. They have not been let into the box sides.

The box looks way too good to be bouncing around in a shed but if you make it, you can do what you damn well please with it, right?!
