Another Walnut Box - this time with Tru-Oil
Nothing special about this box, just walnut with a walnut burr top. I’m posting it just to show the shine that can be achieved with Tru-Oil.

And the shine. Note the reflection of the TV aerial, the window and even the drops of rain on the window. The finish was wiped on with a soft cloth. No polish. It can be rubbed out to a satin finish, of course, but on this one I left it just as it dried.

That's just the type of shine I remember on the objects I saw in Ballarat. You have done a beautiful job on everything.

Hi Taz,
This particular inlay is from Andrew Crawford in the UK (smartboxmaker.com). I imagine someone like Trend Timbers in Sydney would stock bandings, but not sure as I’m in Melbourne

fantastic finish,
please explain your application methodology, so that we can mirror (pardon the pun) your finish.

Thank you for this thread. I have been taking a good, hard look at this Tru-Oil product and your photos have cemented my decision to try it. I believe that it is commonly used for tool handles. The oil is supposed to penetrate into the timber and form a durable surface.
Your box is a work of art as well. When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

Thanks, Ciscokid.
YouTube is a good source of information on using Tru-Oil with guitars, gunstocks and more. If you do try it please Let us know how you go.

hey Homey, Just as a matter of interest, I used Tru-Oil on a guitar I made, about 3 guitars ago. I bought it from a gun shop down in Tassie, but I think it is available at various other sources. Just in my opinion though, I preferred the finish of WOP that I bought from Bunnings, which I used on my last two guitars. I lost track of the number of finishes I applied, maybe close to 30.
I haven't made a box since last October, few health issues going on at present, I hope I can get sorted out.

Hi Paul,
Interesting to hear you used TO on a guitar. What was it that made you prefer poly?
My preferred finishes for boxes are Pre-cat NC lacquer or hard shellac, but sometimes Tru-Oil or Osmo depending on the box. I know a lot of people like polyurethane but I find it yellows quickly if it gets much exposure to sunlight.
I’m currently preparing a test board with TO to answer Fumbler’s question about the methodology - once that’s done I’ll put the board in a sunny spot for a few weeks to see what happens. More later....
Hope your health lets you get back to boxmaking soon, Paul.

I am guessing it's Wipe On Poly.

Hi and sorry chaps, I sort of got sidetracked on things. Yes WOP is wipe on polyurethane. I was pretty impressed with the tin I bought from Bunnings. I used a lot of it on two guitars several months ago, and noticed just the other day what was left had gone hard in the bottom on the tin, so it went into the bin. Danish Oil does the same from Bunnings also.
