    Default Walnut Chess board

I assume this qualifies as a box so here goes.

Made this chess board and box for the pieces about a year or so ago. The squares are American Black Walnut and Ash, box itself from the same Walnut.

I lined the inside with some velvet to loosely fit the chess pieces.

Very nice box, looks great. A lot of work goes into something like this. Did you buy the chess pieces online. I found some site over in India a few years when I buillt myself and grandson one. I think the pieces were about $25 and the quality was amazing. Looked for that site again but nowhere to be found.

Thanks. I bought the chess pieces secondhand of our local auction site.

The attention to detail is spot on and the choice of timbers i think is perfect, well done.

Can i ask what medium you used to glue the squares to?. I ask because i have been approached to make a chess board with 75 x 75 squares so the finished board will be nearly 1200 square. I have no problem with the execution but i am worried how i am going to keep the board from cupping. Any advice?

Thank you for your kind words.

The boards were cut, laminated and cut again to essentially make strips of alternating colour squares. The 8 strips were then merely glued onto a 6mm ply board. You can see the ply on the first photo, uncut from the strips.

The one thing I did struggle with is keeping everything nicely flat untill the glue dries. It's too deep to clamp so you have to resort to weights of some sort. Also having 8 pieces with a will of there own and wanting to slide along as you weigh it down is a mission. If I had to do it again I'd consider glueing one. strip at a time.

. 75 square is massive. I'd suggest a backing of at least 10mm or even 16mm.

Good luck with the project and do post some progress photos for us to enjoy [emoji106]
