    Default Walnut and huon

This is my second attempt at what I call a WaveBox. I posted the first attempt earlier and some very worthwhile feedback was given and so this one comes without the straight lines of the mitre splines. Thank you Wendy....
Only Walnut and Huon was used except for the ply base. I think maybe it would have been better if the waves were thinner and more subtle as they were in the first box.
My skin is reasonably thick, if you think it is hideous, please say so as I am sure it is not what everyone would appreciate......I like the idea and challenge of making a "different' box, something that is not just straight lines. Somewhere here there is an idea trying to get out.
And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.

Looks good from here Ruddy, It'll get better with age too as the Huon goes darker.

    Thumbs up

    Great work there Ruddy!!

Not hideous but That's about as much decoration as the eye can take in. Perhaps only three strands on the lid wouls have been more in keeping with the sides.

Nice work Ruddy, I would like to have seen a WIP on this or at least an explanation of the process you followed. I don't think it is over the top and it is certainly something different that catches the eye. Well done. but would still like a bit of info as to how it was made.

Do I think it would have been better with thinner and more subtle lines? I don't think I would have thought of it had you not mentioned it in your post. I hesitantly say that when design things get busy the least contrast in the wood the better? Maybe you would have been happier if the inlay had been a red brown against the umber of the walnut? But I think this is a design choice and as such has your creativity written all over it. So there must be a question in your mind about busyness. Sometimes you just have to get used to something for a bit. I made a box as a commission a couple of years ago out of spalted beech which was really figured with highly contrasting colours, all wormed as well, so the filled worm lines showed everywhere.. I thought god this is so over the top, but they loved it.. I look at the photo of it now and think mmmm? It was loud. Yours isn't loud, but perhaps more intricate than you are used to making?

My first impressions when I opened your posting was Ahhhh... gorgeous... I particularly like the round reinforcements on the mitre. I am making the assumption that is what they are... Tell more.

I would love to see a WIP.
(you did say you had a thick skin, hope I haven't overstepped!)

Geez Ruddy, you've sure gone and done it now

How on earth am I gonna see you a wave and raise you an ocean now!!

This box is really doing it for me. The waves work, the corners work and keeping to the two timbers ties it all together. My eye is drawn firstly by the contrasting colours, then to the waves and on to the rest of the box.

Then we open the box and get Wowed out all over again.

Yeah, this box does it for me, Ruddy

edit: by any chance is the lid raised in the centre and dipped on the sides, or is that just the waves playing mirages on me??
