| |  Wave Box from an offcut
Recently had to find some suitable timber to use for a demonstration box during a box making workshop that I was facilitating at club level. A quick look around my shed i found two camphor laurel offcuts left over after I had cut the arm profiles for the Maloof Inspired dining chair that I am making (ref. Maloof inspired dining chair in WOODWORK GENERAL) and decided to slice the best of the two into 15mm and 8mm sections, making them a tad over 10mm & 4mm after thicknessing and sanding. Resulting in enough timber to make a box with an inset tray.
I progressively make the box during the workshop showing the step by step principles and then participating members are supervised on each of the machines to develop and make their own box.
The demo box is now complete as per attached pics.

Nice one Kerry. I presume you carved the lid to form the ridges. |

Alex, yes, with mini Arbortech, power disc and hand sanding as part of the workshop. |

That is one lovely box.
I was looking at mini arbotec's at Axminster down near Reading a couple of months ago, I thought of getting a small proxxon angle grinder to weild the arbotec but was put off..
My geriatric angle grinder is just too heavy to use in fine work and I was looking for a light one to do detail work with.. Any suggestions?

Maxine | Maxine my favourite sculpting power tool is a Makita right angle variable speed drill that I use with a selection of home made sanding pads with velcro hook stuck on with heat resistant contact adhesive and use varying grades of cloth backed sand paper cut to the appropriate size. I often use this method alone to create the desired sculptured form. |

Thanks for the advise Kerry. I will look into right angled drills. It would never have occurred to me to use one of those. Think I may have to develop a strong arm, weight doesn't seem to a major issue for manufacturers in power tools.

A very nice box Kerry. The free form makes a nice change from rectangular boxes.
