    Default this weeks boxes

I have been working on a few more boxes of late. I decided that I would try some boxes with miter's instead of the hand cut dovetails I have been doing. I like the look of the continuous grain given with the use of miter's in boxes and thought I would give these a go. My most recent box is fiddle back blackwood with a lid panel made with a small piece of musk that I cut into butterfly bookmatched piece set into a Huon pine frame set into the top of the box. I have also made a start on a couple more sliding draw type boxes with what was left of the material from Tas Sculptor I used recently the fiddle back blackwood is very special and Myrtle birds eye stunning as well I hope they turn out as well as the first. I need to work on my photography skills very much I shall try to get some better photo's tomorrow.
    Regards Rod.

    Hi Rod,
Very nice indeed ... I have never used vertical grain ... but you have inspired me.

I figure that there is no need for splines since the mitre corners are long grain joints.

    Regards

    Rob

Will there be issues with moisture changes and expansion/contraction?

    Hi guy's,
The boxes are not vertical grain they are long grain but the fiddleback is so beautifully strong in these pieces that they appear that way. I am thinking about splines but need to get a square topped saw blade to make nice clean cut for them. I think there would definitely be movement problems in making them short grained dependent a bit I guess on the timber species.(will definitely try for better photo's today)

No worries from me with the glue joins only thinking splines for decoration feature the future on plain boxes.
