    Default Wife's Xmas present - Silver Ash/Wenge

Can't keep track of all that's going on, being pulled in several different directions, but as the man in the red suit will be coming soon, I thought I had better get cracking. I want to finish both before Xmas, this and the starburst.

    IMG_4548.jpg IMG_4552.jpg
Silver ash panels and Wenge strips.
box has been rebated and butt joined
    IMG_4549.jpg
Then rebates some more to give me the channels around the entire box perimeter 4mm x 4mm
    IMG_4550.jpg IMG_4556.jpg
Then I carefully glued in the edging, mitering the corners, not 3 way, I butt joined the pillars.
    IMG_4562.jpg IMG_4563.jpg
Once glue dried, I trimmed down with block plane flush, then rounded over.
    IMG_4577.jpg IMG_4578.jpg
    Then sanded nice and flush.
    IMG_4579.jpg IMG_4580.jpg IMG_4594.jpg
I then separated the lid ready for the seperator strip to be glued on
    IMG_4595.jpgIMG_4596.jpg
The box is actually on my sanding board, a 35mm thick jointed flat piece of 300 wide Blackbutt, nice and solid covered with 150grit paper. It does an awesome job of mating lid to base
    IMG_4597.jpg
    Next came the lip edging
    IMG_4614.jpg IMG_4615.jpg IMG_4640.jpg
Sorry they are round the wrong way
    IMG_4641.jpg IMG_4641.jpg
    Sorry it's a bit dark.
    more to follow.

    IMG_4658.jpg IMG_4659.jpg IMG_4661.jpg IMG_4664.jpg
This will be covered, so hopefully it all works out, it not its back to the drawing board and new card.
then came the tray supports and finally the tray

It's good to get some detailed WIP posts at the moment for those of us starting out and trying to learn all we can.

TC, thanks, I'm officially still leaning also as this is only my 4th box. My 3rd big jewellery box.

I think it looks fantastic. Such simple and clean lines. You have done well.

    Looks great so far.

How have you found the Silver Ash to work? I made a coffee table out of it last year and found that it machined and sanded really well but was a bit brittle and uncooperative with hand tools. Any thoughts?

    Cheers,
    Luke

I love it, but very prone to warping if too high a moisture content. I bought a 200x35 piece and sliced it up, jointed and thicknesser and it actually released so much tension so fast that it warped whilst going through the drum sander. slightly susceptible to tear out, but I love the pale colour and sands well.

The front on picture wasn't exactly clear. And splines in the tray.

A very nice looking box, it shows that it's not always necessary to have highly figured timber to achieve a great result.

thank you, and yes i agree wholeheartedly. There is actually some slight features which i chose for the front, but with high gloss Ash goes reflective almost.

Its funny, this actually started out as a 10minute knock up to test a finishing procedure i wanted to try, but hen became too nice to be a test box, although I may keep going with my finishing plans as worst case scenario, i sand back to bare timber and start again with a different method

anyhow, it's now her birthday present. So damn the thumb, full speed ahead.

    heres some updated pics.

Should have it finished in the next next week or so. Stay tuned.
