Here's a smallish 190x120x75 Queensland silver ash carcass/Tas Blackwood keepsake box. Just unclamped and sanded. It will be accompanied by Blackwood Japanese style corner posts and silver ash/Blackwood handle. Mitred corners, rebated inset lid. Same length of timber so grain flows continuously. Non hinged lid and will be finished with Kunos Livos oil.

Nice and elegant. Those two timbers are always a great combination.

Sorry for no updates as life keeps getting in the way!! A bit more progress but re-design due to overzealous spline cutting. So decided to go a different route.

Sorry the last 2 flipped over.

Finally finished rubbing out last coat of kunos oil. I had to start again on the lid as 2 scratches magically appreared on the first time I did a final rub down.

    anyway, c&c welcome

Im sure it will be well received. There is however a small blemish on the bottom on the lid where it meets the base so will need to sort that out before sending.

    thanks

Thanks all, but I noticed a small dent on the underneath side of the lid so I now have to figure out a way to fix, probably need to take 1mm off the bottom of the lid.

You can remove the dent with a very wet cloth and hot iron on it.

thanks but probably more tear out than dent. I had several throughout the course and used this method with great success.

That looks great, Fumbler. How did you get the drop-in lid so snug against the rebated sides- very neat! Wish I could do that.

Did you allow for expansion of the timber of the lid?
    regards,

    That's beautiful.

Do you mind me asking where in Sydney you source your wood from?

Thanks Dengue, i used the table saw to cut the rebates this time as opposed to the router, I think because I was rushing and didn't think too much about the grain orientation until it was too late the router rebate cutter would've caused too much tearout. The carcass was knocked up in sub-10min. As for the Blackwood inset I used 3 things. 1) a rather accurate table saw 90deg sled, 2) a shooting board and block sander for fine adjustment 3) a truckload of luck. It's not 100% but pretty damn close to it.

no, I don't worry about small % increases in humidity as at the moment with all the rain about the lid is quite snug to lift on and off. Although having said that I am concerned enough to put splines in as I don't want the mitred joint to split.

Thanks Taz, the Blackwood was bestowed upon me from a work colleague who was downsizing and realised he was never going to use it all. It was quite a lot of timber, from ex-luthier bookmatched pieces, banding, inlay, purfling, to slabs of southern silky oak. The silver ash was bought from Trend Timber at Mulgrave, but i also source timber from Cresent Timber and Anagote for specific species, not obtainable from a local timber yard.

the 2018 TWWW show is coming up in mid-late July at Rosehill racecourse and you should be able to pick up a nice variety of specialised timbers from there. Trend should be there, Boutique Timbers aswell, they have a great selection but a bit of a stretch of a drive for a Monday (my day of peace) 5hrs up north.
