    Good work, Fumbler!

I like the clean understated look. Inlay banding on the sides ties in well with the lid, too.
What type of finish will you use?

I'll probably use Livos oil, as I've heard it's a nice and easy finish. I can't afford the time to keep messing it up like a box that I wanted to give as a gift over a month ago and have kept massing up the lid. 4 times I have taken back to bare wood. And as the jobs/requests keep stacking up I don't want to be spread over several jobs at the one time.

Fumbler, what a MIGHTY haul of inlay you have!!!!!! That tube!

As for finish, my new, absolute favourite are two things: Livos Kunos (most things) and if I want beautiful shiny finishes then Poly.

With the poly, its a quick process. Dead easy.

-- Spray a light tack coat
-- Wait 5 minutes, spray a decent coat
-- Wait 1 hour, spray another decent coat.
    -- Let harden.
-- Sand using a block and 400 grit to knock off the nibs
-- Use a 3M Extra fine pad (white) on the bottom of the ROS and polish that poly!

The 3M pad does ALLLLLL the hard work and you are left with a flat shiny surface in no time flat.

You spotted the tube, not bad for free (the inlay I mean) I was given more than I could fathom using, and very handy indeed to hide join lines. Can't even tell it's 2 pieces, from the same block of timber though, hence the great colour match.

Splines are in, I used matching silky oak for the carcass and Purple Heart for the trays which will match the purple suede tray lining.

there isn't a spline at the base as I thought it might be too busy. And had I had my thinking cap on I should've done them scaled down 15mm wide, 10mm wide and 5mm wide at the base but Harry Hindsight is a wonderful thing. The base which is glued into a slot should stop the bottom/legs from splitting anyway.

Ok, I've sliced the lid off, used my new concealed barrel jig that is custom made for the hinges. Routered out the back edge, just past centre to get greater than 90deg opening. And oiled the trays, just have to trim the linings as a tad over sized, then oil the box.

Oh oh and matching picture frame from the off cuts.

Lovely box, Fumbler. I particularly like the inlay banding around the inner edge and the subtle 'feet'.

How are you fixing in the linings? Double sided tape? And the top tray dividers - how are they held in place - glue and a friction fit?

    One lucky Mother-in-law there!

As you asked before about the bottom tray being fixed, it's not now, but it is a very (very) snug fit, so I might sand first to fit. It won't be coming out that's for sure. I sprayed acid free spray adhesive on the card then affixed the felt, then sprayed around edges of the card underneath and the material for double bond. The linings are snug and done need any tape but I will use a small amount of super thin double sided tape that I have.

i did have an extra 4 pieces of banding but not sure if they will be any good due my steaming 4 at once. I steamed them to take the twist out but steamed too much and now the black has elf through. If I'm lucky it will sand out. If not it's no love lost as it was free. (Please note the orange quiver in first pics).

Day 2, second coat of Kunos Livos oil. So far so good. I'm loving this finish, so easy and great results.

3rd coat now on. On the first and second coats I used the same piece of rag which had been soaked from the first, then wrapped in plastic and stuffed inside 2 zip lock sandwich bags to keep moist and on the third coat, I just put the rag on the bottle top and tipped the bottle up. Hardly any at all and buffed in moderately. Done Friday morning. I also drilled the magnet catch holes yesterday, recessing them just below the surface to weaken the grip as quite strong little buggers.

So next round will be completed pics.

As coming to an end and and idle mind is dangerous, i am about to head in to the shop and turn this Dai Sensei created block into a few rings, which should look fantastic (all going to plan that is)
