Default WIP - Using up scraps to make a box (well it has 4 sides and a base, so it's a box).

I've got a couple of weeks off work for Christmas, so that means more shed time. I've got a lot of scrap pieces of timber, and thought I'd have a go at making something a bit different to use some of them up. I'm going to make a pen caddy, with a tumbling box design. I've had a go at drawing it in sketchup. I've got a few different types of timber to use. Walnut, Qld maple, jarrah (?), and something else.

The idea is to make a wide "panel", and cut off slices to make the front face. I think they might make a good gift, so I'm plannng on making a few at the same time.

Thicknessed everything to around 20mm, then set up the SCMS at 30 degrees with a stop-block. My stock is about 60mm wide, so I'm hoping to get 4 slices from it.

Made up a simple L-shaped gluing station out of melamine. Going together well. Realised too late that I had one of the "cubes" around the wrong way...

The width of the front panel is around 100mm, so I need to make more panels for the sides and back.

After the glue dried, I jointed the face, and then took off a 10mm slice on the bandsaw. Repeated the process to get 4 slices.

The slices are not long enough to run through the thicknesser, so I glued them to some pine offcuts, and then ran them through the thicknesser to get down to 8mm.

I've got a spiral head in my thicknesser, and it does a fantastic job. The waste pine is trimmed off, and the pieces are cut to length and mitred.

It's coming together, and looks like the drawing!

I'm applying some finish to the inside faces, to help make removal of glue sqeezeout a bit easier. The colours are starting to pop. I'm using Minwax WOP Gloss for these.

    That's it for today's efforts.

What do you think? Will they make an interesting gift?

    Cheers,

    ajw

That will look fantastic when finished. Already looks good, and yes it will make a great gift. A lot of work so hopefully the recipient will appreciate it.

Glued two of them up, and then added a round-over to all external edges. A couple of coats of WOP applied. I'm not a fan of gloss, but I've got a tin of it, and this seems like the kind of project that could be OK with a gloss finish. Will give it a couple more coats and see what it looks like. When I made the tumbling box panel, I made it long enough to get a pen caddy and a shorter section. I'm planning on making this shorter section into a shallow version of the pen caddy, for storing paper clips, bulldog clips etc.

    Comments and suggestions welcome.

They do look great. Thanks for the WIP. I wish I could get that much shed time atm - aged parent issues!

Still, my scrap bin is starting to look more promising now!

I've got lots of scraps. I can't bring myself to throw it away, so I need to find things to make with it. These were not too difficult to make, once I'd drawn it up.

    Thanks for the nice comments.

    cheers,

thanks Artme. They've been very popular with people I've shown them to. Lots of people asking for one - I will have to make a bigger batch next time.

    cheers,

There's a few different timbers used. Walnut, rosewood, Qld maple, jarrah, silky oak, and lots of others I can't name...

It's a good way of using up the off-cuts I've been holding on to for years.

    Cheers,

    ajw
