Without wanting to appear a Sm23t a@#$e It's a bit like asking " how long is a Piece of string?"

There are any number of timbers suitable fo the purpose and your choice will depend on whether you want a knock-me-about box, a good storage box or a display box.

In Europe you have access to walnut, beech, birch, oak and any number of conifer species. Make your choice,

The best wood is easy to work, the right size, was given to you by a mate, has superb figure, is stable, and glues and finishes well.

    Problem solved

Whichever wood species you use, just make sure to account for preventing corrosion if the tools are stored for any length of time (some woods are better intrinsically, but prevention is worthwhile/necessary).
