Default complex 3D shapes on the router table

Ive been watching a series of videos by a car audio installer. He goes over everything and fabricates panels and whatnot.

There are a LOT of lessons here for boxmakers.

One of the tools he uses is called an "Animal" on which you mount your object and use an ordinary router table to mould it into complex curves and shapes.

It is worth the time to view:

Thanks for posting that link. I wonder if it would be possible to construct a similar jig in the "home workshop".

Opens up a whole host of new possibilities, would take a bit of fine tuning to make your own jig but think of the results

I was going to make a jig for surface Planing on the Table instead of the typical handheld router version I was using, it's just too hard to control fine dust in handheld mode. I hadn't thought about doing curves and this is just the incentive I needed to make up an even more useful version of the jig I had in mind. Thanks for the info and link.

Ive struck up a bit of a conversation with the stereo bloke. Ill see if we cant get a few units over here at a decent price...

Yes, a decent DC would be mandatory. It would be diabolical for dust. Perhaps one of BobLs big bell mouthed hoods flattened out.... or a "sawdust wall" like youd use behind an SCMS?

If you remember the Router table build I posted, it has a completely redesigned router mounting and insert design. I've already proven that it will get every speck of dust when operated in this way. The through table intake (around the bit) can be opened all the way up to 150 x 100 mm if needed (a simple insert swap takes a few seconds) and has an almost unobstructed path into a 150mm extraction port - in any case as most of you likely know, you really need at least a 3HP DC.

I'll put my hand up for a unit, depending on landed cost of course. Please keep us informed?

Some 25 years ago I constructed a simple Jig to rout the external curve when I was constructing The top rail of my dining room chairs {Completed with the router} Not only did I complete the external curve but I also produced the internal curve. This internal curve was not possible to be achieved using the table mode {IMHO} I will search the shed to see if the Jig is still there also have a look to see if there is some Material on a video I may have made at the time.

Looks nice, but I have a very specific reason for using my table whenever I can.

For me to use a hand held router, you need to find a way to catch every bit of dust right down to the invisible dust when you use a router this way. Yes you can wear a mask, vent the shed, then clean the router and workplace once finished - I use a table router with a 150mm 3HP DC stuck up it's backside - I have absolutely no clean up and no health issues - and I don't need a mask.

For others this my indeed be an attractive alternative.
