I did think of using the shaft as a guide, but being a novice with a router I was unsure...I thought perhaps that was not a good idea as it would either burn a wood guide or if I used an alloy guide god knows what I would end up doing

Yet to follow up on the previous information, however if it all falls through I'll do a pass from either side of the piece with 2 different bits to keep it neat/flush.

It actually works surprisingly well. A 3/8" solid carbide spiral bit with that cutting length is still a bit exotic though. It'd need to be 90mm long, I certainly don't have one with that cutting length.

Carbitool used to do a 3/8 with a 2" cut, it's not in their catalogue any more but I'm sure they'll make one if you ask

Whatever you decide on with a cutter selection,in use it would aid you in doing light passes in your cuts to prevent shaft deflection.Keep doing this until you get to the desired finish.
You will preserve your cutter as well as the bearings & strain on your router.
A couple of manufacturers of 3/8 shaft router bits are also Leigh (for the use on their jigs) as well as Festool which are not cheap .both of these have to be purchased overseas,I have them & they are not cheap.
    Good luck with your project.
    Cheers

I thought Festool bits were 8mm, not 3/4

All good guys, thanks so much for your input.

A guy from Carbitool phoned me after I emailed them, he was great to talk to. They would do it for me, however in the end he really convinced me it would be better to get a 1/2" router. At this stage, I don't see too much routeing happening in my projects, however I did invest a small amount into the 'mid range/entry level' 1/4" Makita RP0900X1 router which I intend to use moderately.

I looked for a S/H quality router on gumtree etc. However the prices seemed a little steep to me considering condition and they were not in the mood for negotiation. So I decided to go ahead and get the cheaper MT Makita M3600G for $150. I figure I'll get some life out of it, and perhaps I'll end up putting it in a table and keep my other little guy for handheld use.

1/2" 50mm bit on the way, so I'll let you know if I end up cutting my table frame in half
Thanks for the advice on light passes, I think I'll be doing just that to prevent chipping it all out.

I'm now less daunted by running into problems while pretending to know what I'm doing, as I can just come here and ask!

That basically sums it up; if no one makes the bit you're looking for, there's a good reason for it.
Having used their 3/8 x 2" bit many times, I understand why it's discontinued.
