Inlay (double) dovetails with Leigh jig?
Hi,
New member here. I tried searching the forum for this topic but couldn't find anything. Apologies if someone already answered my question.
I'm trying to find some instructions on how to use the Leigh TD-515 dovetail jig (I know, it's a very ancient model) to create half-blind inlay (double) dovetails. I can't seem to find anything online. I also have access to another jig similar to the blue one below, I can't recall the brand name at the moment.
Could anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks!
Yves

Sorry, not able to offer an experience based answer for you. The basic concept is to make a broad dovetail using the selected timber and contrasting timber, permanently assemble that and trim the excess contrast timber so it is flush with the inside face of the selected timber, then reset the jig to cut a narrower dovetail within the contrast timber. From my understanding you need different sized bits and template guides.
I suggest that you visit the Leigh site and download the manuals and instruction videos for the current SuperJig and D4 range. I believe they discuss the finer details.I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

Thank you Malb and John, very helpful! I think the only issue is that on the TD515 model I cant mount a piece horizontally into the jig, but Im sure I can figure it out with the D4 instructions.

If you can get enough info to cut dovetails with the jig, you just need to apply that method twice for each corner, once to set the inlay board into the corner, and again once to cut smaller dovetails into the inlay board, and set the side board into the inlay.
