How to Measure?
A recent Australian woodworking magazine carried an article on "Routing Groves & Trenches" using a jig with a folding fence.
As mentioned by the author, the key to making the jig is to size the said fence "....to match the distance from the edge of the baseplate to the centre of the bit".
Any suggestion how to measure this distance accurately bearing in mind that "...the baseplate may not be centred on the bit..." ?
Thanks yvan

The baseplate on my triton router is 165mm. so half the distance is 82.5mm and that gets me pretty close for most things.
but if you wanted to get really accurate, you can mess around and do something like this....
get a piece of MDF and a straight edge. clamp the straight edge to the mdf. set your router up with a 1/2" straight bit (or any other bit straight bit) and router a groove using the fence as a guide (mark the point on the baseplate which rides against the fence).
measure the width of the groove you cut, technically it should be 12.7mm but with wear n tear and sharpening it will be anywhere around that figure. call this figure "A". now measure the distance between the fence and the shoulder of the groove closest to the fence. call this figure "B"
distance between baseplate and center of router bit = A/2 + B this will be accurate for the one particular point on the baseplate which rode against the fence.

Some routers have a "flat " section which makes it easier but as Kuffy has said, clearly mark the edge you use against any jig as not all (especially some of the newer, cheaper versions) are definitely not in the centre of the circular baseplate.
