Kuffy,
I had similar concerns when I first bought those drawer slides from China. In fact this whole exercise was just a "proof of concept", I never actually expected it to produce a useful tool. It was going to be a case of build this one and make all the mistakes then build the real one with good quality materials. Even the plywood was cheap at $25 for a 2400 x 1200 sheet. But in fact it's exceeded all expectations turning an unused piece of junk (the K-Mart router) into something that I can see getting a lot of use. The other thing to remember is that I'm using the cheap bit that came with the router. It also came with four other bits (for $58 for the lot). I doubt this bit is the best quality so at some stage when I get a brand new quality bit I expect to get even better results.
Good luck with your build. You'll probably be able to follow the instructions just like I did but if you run into any roadblocks just sing out..

Tom, just to let you know, I often use template guides just not with mortises and lots of other tasks where the table is fantastic AND I don't see where this GREATER SAFETY AWARENESS concern you have regarding routers held in tables/jigs etc comes from - did you have an accident at some stage?
Cheers Peter.

Peter
Certain Projects should be done in the table mode. It is only some 25 years plus when I introduced the use of the template guides. As you said you do use the guides I would be interested in what sort of process was carried out when you were using the guides I am 82 year o;ld and have been working with wood for over 67 years. No I have never had an accident with the use of the router and I do conduct workshops at a number of Men's sheds. I was trying a project on the table mode and I could see I could have an accident and I completed the project using the base of the router as a "Template Guide" Which meant a very large template but the job was completed with Greater Safety AwarenessLearn new Routing skills with the use of the template guides

Some of my template guides
Tom, there are some tasks which I have found needed templates and template guides like I have found some tasks need a chisel instead of a router bit. As they say "horses for courses"
Some of mine are shown below;
Template to route my table saw top to fit a ZCI

Template to route router table draw for draw pulls

Template to to route rebate for table top cross brace - needed a chisel to square it off

They are are nothing fancy, they are just a means to an end. It's like any tool, what ever works best for the job at hand.
Even for mortises and tenons I have a number of jigs depending on the situation however none of them require template guides and all are infinitely adjustable.

More photos showing some small incremental improvements:
- Ugly dust collection tube has been replaced with the smaller transparent model so that I can now watch the dust being whisked away. T-Track was also installed to hold the stop block:

- Made a reducer for the connection by bandsawing the circular shape from ply then using a hole saw to remove the middle
DSC_1543 (Large).jpg This allows much easier attachment. The hose just slips over the end of the tube and sits there without additional means of attachment
- Final results:
