Default Black Japan - Japan Black ???

    Hi all,

I recently made some shelving units fro a mate of mine, to match a TV unit I made a couple years ago for him.
We finished the TV unit in 'japan black' and shellac, however nowt he problem is that I'm finding it near on impossible to get 'japan black' (as a stain, and NOT a pre-mixed poly).

Can anyone tell me where I might be able to get or purchase some 'japan black'???

    ...
    Regards
    TT

Try the Feast and Watson product. Comes in a black can(like most Feast and Watson things) and should be available at your local Mitre 10 or paint shop.

No, the Feast Watson product was discontinued last year although you might find old stock(?). Here is the recipe FW gave me to mimic Japan black using prooftint colours:

    1 part Black
    2 parts Walnut
    2 parts Teak Brown

I spent weeks looking for Black Japan to redo our pine dining table at the end of last year, but it had disappeared from every hardware I looked in in Brisbane. I ended up using FW Black Japan Stain and Varnish, which did a really terrible job. If I'd known how it would end up, I would have just painted it with black gloss paint and saved the cost of the BJ, the sanding sealer and the gloss varnish - well over $100, plus the hours of time sanding and numerous coats, and the weeks of delay caused to the renovation program which means we still don't have a dining room ceiling. I could have painted with a quick sand, two coats and finished it in a weekend for $30. Very unhappy!

I'd be really happy if FW were still producing it, so I can give it another go.
    Cheers, Richard

You'll find a list of suppliers on the website I linked. I'd suggest if you go to the hardware and they don't have it, then the paint dept should be able to get it in for you.
