If you are not trying to remove old finish, then just soap and water.

Wouldn’t a wax finish on a fire screen just melt ?

If you mean one of the pressed brass ones? They are just brass -possibly treated for a brown patina? if so go gentle -If after polished brass - then can be more vigorous - but not abrasive with course things. Photos would help!!! Steel mesh is something else. Oh and wax finish on a fire screen best be for something that covers -ONLY when not in use. For hopefully obvious reasons!

I beg too differ, a lot of open fire places I have seen do have a screen to stop embers.

Yes tho granted there are screens that are just ornamental, too just cover the fire pit area.
