Default Best finish for an clothes drying rack

    Hi forumites,

I am building a hanging clothes drying rack for my carport, probably out of Tasmanian Oak (I think).

It will be permanently under cover, and it won't be rained on or direct sunlight, but it will have wet clothes and sheets hung over it (obviously).

What would be the best waterproof finish?

I was thinking a sealer, staining to resemble something a bit more exciting than Tassie Oak, then two coats of Feast Watson Floorseal.

cheers and thanks for any advice.

    Steve

    Default Finish for clothes rack

    Hi Spirit Level,

I'd go for two or three coats of Estapol 7008 two pack. You will need to rejuvenate the finish with a back up coat every 12 to 15 years depending on the level of use. 7008 stinks a bit but only for a couple of hours.

There's a few tricks with using this finish to get a top job. First put it on at a moderate application level with a good brush and then don't play with it just leave it alone its got fantastic self leveling properties but only if you just leave it alone and don't play with it. Don't worry about the first coat. It usually looks a bit suss but by the time the second coat has cured it looks a M$.

It's usually cheaper to throw the brushes away between coats and buy new ones as the solvent is pretty exxy. You can use cellulose thinner which is much cheaper as a brush cleaner but please watch the flammability of this product. Good luck. Old Pete

Thanks for the advice - two very different approaches there, so somethings to consider
