Thread: Best Finish for Pine Bookcase

When I made a toybox out of pine, I finished it with 3 coats of stain varnish (a 4th coat wouldn't have hurt) and 2 coats of poly over the top of that. Came out ok.

i just finished an upholstered pine footstool. Finished it in 5 or 6 coats of white paint

Seriously though, go the estapol?

You left out wax.

How about you use a finish you haven't used before. None of ones you mentioned or wax are going to wreck the bookcase and you will have learnt something new.

When you complete a project using expensive timber and complex joints, you may not be as prepared to experiment with unknown finishes but a bit of experience now will broaden your range of choice.

Go out an splerge on a CIG easy sprayer, around $150.00 a little and i do mean a little you will be spraying with suprising results.

I have not used oils on pine, however I have used a "wad" to apply some finishes, like stains and dilutes poly etc.
Me I would go and but a easy srayer, look like crap, work like a little ripper, I stayed away from "airless' especially the cheaper, apparantly Neil (forum owner) has had success with the Krebs line of Airless, sold by Oldfeilds I think.

I recently built a large pine bookcase 2.5m X 2.3m.

I used Cobots water based varnish with a baltic pine stain in it.

Worked out great as there was no smell (assembled and finished on site because of size) and it took most of the 5 litres for the 3 coats.

Varnish cost about $115 from Bunnings but could well cost less if u shop around.

Hi Colin, I have exptensively used 2 sikkens product for pine. On new pine the teak stain followed by 2 coats of the supernatural is great. I even had a professional use it after seeing my work.
The baltic stain is also good as suggested by someone else.
