Default Help needed with FW Floorseal finish

Making a couple of boxes in time for Xmas, ran out of Livos Kunos #244 oil after the first one finished, so tried some FW Floorseal - read well, tung oil with hardeners, no problem, should go well. Turps based.

Well, the Floorseal finish went very sticky after a few minutes of being applied evenly with a foam brush fairly well loaded with the oil. Fairly warm in the tropics today, 33degC out on the patio where I was doing this. Quickly dabbed a rag into the oil and went over it again to wipe off any excess. Big mistake. Ended up with big sticky runs and very streaky finish in places.

Never have this problem with Kunos.

Can anyone please advise the best way to apply Floorseal to a box so that I get a nice smooth even finish?
    regards,

    Dengy

    Hi Dengy,

I don't understand why you would go from Livos oil to Floor seal! Especially when you are working to a time limit. What about one of the many other finishes you have tried? Surely you have enough of one off those to do the job. BTW How old is the Floor Seal? I would suggest removing the FW sealer and use something you have had success with before.

If you want, you can send the boxes down to me and I'll finish them for you in HBO. You pay postage both ways, but you'll have them finished and returned by Friday. (assuming you post them tomorrow by fast post.)

    Regards,

    Rob

Thanks for your kind offer, Rob, very much appreciated. I ran out of Kunos after doing the first box, and the shops were shut. I had a can of Floorseal that I used for testing about 2 years ago, so decided to give that a go.

I considered taking your advice to strip off the Floorseal , but that is easier said than done, esp with a small box ( interior dimensions 140 x 240 x 100H).

Any suggestions on how best to do this?

I am expecting some Kunos early next week, so would like to use that again
    regards,

I used it and found it to be frustrating too. I was Appling with a bristle brush. I then switched to foam. Let it harden and then sand down. Apply again with the foam brush but apply a thin layer and do in one consistent pass. If you are having trouble in the corners tape of 2 sides and only focus on the non taped area then once dry switch the sides with tape and focus on those sides. Make sure to stir the can and handle the liquid as little as possible to reduce the amount of bubbles in the liquid.
Be careful when sanding that you do not heat and melt your current application. If you are using stain it could be removed aswell when it is melted and is hard to restain a small patch again without stripping the whole project. Best of luck.

Default Help needed with FW Floorseal finish

    Hey mate

I reckon a card scraper will help you remove the finish.
