Probably a very basic question, but can a danish/tung oil finish be used over any stain type (ie. water, spirit or oil based) ? Finishers' Handbook will probably tell me but only just ordered and still waiting to arrive

I am finishing a new clock case that is in European Beech and want to stain it darker to a sort of jarrah colour and finish with an oil finish. On tests on off-cuts, the beech doesn't take up oil based stain well, but takes up the spirit based stuff well

Is this a reasonable way to go - spirit based stain, danish oil then wax finish?

Thanks for any advice
