Waterbased Undercoat Turps topcoat
Yep I did it .....
Doing up my new/old trailer.
I stripped off all the old paint from the timber and metal, painted the metal with coldgal undercoat, painted the timber with waterbased under coat on saturday
, came home for lunch today (monday), got a tin of paint out of the shed and slapped it on, then remembered that "that paint smell" was a turps based paint.
Now I can't quite remember
back 20 years, but will I get bubbling or a reaction betwwen the two????
luckily I only did one board on the rear tailgate, not all the others!!!!!!

Solvent-based paints over water-based, ( Acrylic ), undercoats / sealers,- I do it all the time. Providing the undercoat / sealer is hard dry, and sandable you won't have any probs as modern-day acrylic undercoats / sealers are formulated to be safely used under either acrylic, or solvent-based topcoats. Although I am NOT an expert on paint products, over the years I have a habit of asking various Paint Co. Reps heaps of , ( annoying ? ) questions when I come across one in our local hardware shop,- and most times I receive sensible answers, as that's what Sales Reps are for aren't they ???

Solvent over water? AFAIK you should be fine. I also do that all the time.
I've found it's t'other way - water over solvent - that's the one prone to lemon peeling.

No problems,use some PENETROL in the oil paint for a smooth brush mark free finish

Thanks fellas,
I dont think the penetrol is required as I ripped off the paint with a flapper disc and maznaged to get a real interesting finish that looks similar to the surface oif the moon!!
might not try the same procedhure with the rest of the trailer
