0000 Malaysian Blackwood build
After a few years in the planning stage the guitar build has started.
As this is to be a tribute guitar to my late wife, Monique, I'm cheating and I've enlisted the help of Jack Spira to build it for me as I look over his shoulder in the next few weeks. I didn't want to stuff this up and it's taken me a long time to assemble all the materials. No need to cross my fingers, Jacks work is always stunning.

You cant go too far wrong with Jack looking over your shoulder......one of the best in the business IMHO and an absolute gentleman to boot.
Whatever note you blow youre never more than a semitone away from the correct one....(Miles Davis)

Another productive day.
Very solid with the linings in.
This is the non show (inside) face of the back. The show side is something else again.
It's a shame this figure won't be seen.
And that is today's effort.
The Malaysian Blackwood came from allied lutherire.
Jack is an amazing character and a true gent. His work is stunning. I am truly blessed to be part of this project and process. His workshop is such a lovely place to be in.
I already have the materials and plans in place for a 000 12 fret out of similar wood. I'm very lucky.
Yes, I can see how addictive it can be. I'll be a regular at the workshop until my little studio is made latter in the year.
Stay tuned.

A little magic done with a sharp chisel. A little sanding and most of the voice is set. It was wonderful to discuss the shaping of the braces and how to bring out the highs, mids and lows. I opted for a little extra bottom end. Jack makes it seem easy. Lots of practice can do that.
Scarf joint done on the neck blank. Jacks been a sport and agreed to try out Macassar Ebony for the neck. Should look great and have a bucket load of sustain.
We also braced up the back but I forgot to get a photo.

Top and sides have come together.
Heal block lamination added to the neck blank. Back braces shaped.
A good few hours spent learning lots.
If this thing sounds half as good as it looks in the raw then I will be a very happy man.

Well, a little more gets done each session.
You can see the great colour and figure in the back. Which is now glued on to form the box of the body.
The neck has just has the trus rod slot routered.
At the bottom of the last image you can see the stick of ringed gidgee that the bindings will be made from.
What a shame I have to return to work soon.
I know a lot of you are skilled guitar makers but I am learning heaps with this project and having Jack Spira do a step by step is amazing. What a lovely fellow.
I'll post back when its all done and dusted ....
may be at the end of the term.
Please feel free to comment, either +ve or -ve. I do value feed back.
all the best

A little more progress. The ebony makes it all a little slow going. From bandsaw blade to plane blade to chisels resharpen often.

I hope most of the wood work will be done by the end of the school holidays. Then its finishing and set up. Thanks again to Jack for making this thing all happen. I'm dying to see the thing complete, with finish on it. Then...I can't wait for the first real strum and finger pick of a tune or two. Then... wait for her to find her voice.
One step at a time...one task at a time...it will get there.
