Default 1970s Maton 12 string neck joint problem !

Hi, thank you for having a look at this.

Can anyone help with explaining how this neck joint at the heel is constructed in a 1970's Maton 12 string acoustic ?

As the photos show, it appears to be in 2 pieces, with the joining surfaces opening up down the centreline, and on the bottom of the neck, but not on the vertical sides of the body.

I'm speculating it may not be directly joined to the heel block inside the body via a dovetail joint, and is perhaps more for lateral stability of the neck rather than strength of the bond to the block.

You have a mess on your hands there.

How much is this guitar really worth to you?

It will need a neck reset and some significant work to fix this up. I would budget at least $500 for the repair...

This stacked heel neck construction has been pretty conventional for the past 20 years.. The vast majority of necks are made this way now as huge trees have become more scarce.

Joint wise - I would expect a more or less standard dovetail... Which now appears to be split right down the middle through that dovetail..

Wow, Maton really cheaped out on this using a vertically laminated heel block, but that attitude was often the case with maton when they were building to a price point.
It would be a standard dovetail.
There is significant shrinkage of the block, either it has been exposed to really dry conditions, and/or the wood was not properly seasoned.
The joint which matters most is the block to neck shaft, has that opened up?
If the action is too high, it would need a neck reset, but otherwise I would be leaving repairs till then.
