Thread: Need advice

I would suggest sanding the shellac back rather than using metho to remove it, sanding will leave the grain filled, metho will expose the furrows. So are you going for a solid colour now? I think it would look good with a colour on it.

yeah I have another project guitar that I can shellac
it would be a better thing to hone my skills on
the esquire deserves a better job than I can give it
it may cost a couple of dollars but have started cleaning out some tools that were my dads and will sell them on the wood forum
i will keep some planes that are sentimental but I have no use for some as you will see if you look at my add
there is a luthier at caves beach and did a good job on my other guitar so will plan on using him

shellac goes through a gun nice if its the right consistency - shoot it like lacquer and rub it back with 1500 grit wetndry - burnish it with the back of the paper and youll have a pretty nice finish. Quality dewaxed shellac flakes can be found in the confectionery trade - easy to mix up - a very low tech approach - 1/3 fill a honey jar [glass] with flakes cover it with diggers metho - stir it a few times over the next 48 hours. pour into another jar the same size and mix up the residue in the first jar with more metho - when that is all dissolved pour it into jar one and fill it 7/8 full with more diggers metho - its ready for the gun - good for a couple to 6mths on the shelf then discard it

At all costs resist the temptation to make you guitar a sticky mess with any kind of wax

i finished up with a solid grey with a clear coat

really happy and sounds great
