f it was an 'advertising slogan', and say, for example, Bob didnt know what he was doing,
dont you think someone might have twigged by now...?? . .
Why would anyone advertise themselves at being able to do something that they didnt know anything about??.....doesnt really make sense.
Lets make it very easy.....
HANDS UP ALL THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH TIMBER FOR 40 YEARS....HANDS ON...EVERY DAY???
you just cannot disregard the opinion of a person with that experience....and lets face it, the only person that would lose, if it didnt ring true, would be Bob...
he's one of the few people that basically, has anything to lose, here....its his business
And a little xmas cheer and respect wouldnt go astray, either

There is nothing disrespectful in what I said or asked Slapfest. Experience counts for nothing if you can't support your claim in my opinion.

oh, i dont know.... i think standing behind your product, with your words and actions is ok by me,......
i dont see you putting anything personal on the line, here...
And, for what its worth, buddy youre just arguing for the sake of it.....
its ok for you to think how you like, but dont ask other people to waste their time proving you wrong.
did you catch that bit before about some people and listening?

I know, why dont you prove him wrong.....
you could get Bob to pick out some of his finest, and both give the timber to a 3rd party agreed apon luthier, and have him make the finest guitar he can from it.
at your expense, of course...
we can all be the judje.....
now THAT would be putting your money where your mouth is

and to be honest, the fact that we're actually arguing about ANYONE, not just bob,
NOT recognising tonewood in just about any size or form, by
THE NOISE IT MAKES.....WHEN CUT PROPERLY.
its chalk and cheese, if your listening...
little bits sound like they wanna be chimes or xylophone bars...bigger bits hum and really ring......if held correctly......its not rocket science....even i can do it, and i'm not the greatest woodworker, to be honest........but theres no denying that sound, if you LOOK for it......
it always makes me smile when i hear a little bit go plink on the floor,in a real high note, or i can play notes on the ends of my ng rosewood birds nest....just absolutely sings, if you clamp it long enough.......its everywhere
as its been mentioned before, the big traditional tonewoods just happened to be relatively cheap, plentiful at the time, and easy to work....and they DID work...but the club's not exclusive....we've got plenty here as good, and better, it just depends on how your looking at things
i apologise if i'm explaining the obvious, but i have to assume that U know what it sounds like, too...right?
so what are we arguing about?

In Scientific circles, It is the one making the claim who is required to prove his assertion and have the methodology of any tests or experiments available for scrutiny and peer review.
Here we have Bob making the assertion that Old growth wood gives the best tone in an electric guitar (except for silver wattle which is still good because it is dense)
The only evidence for this that he seems to be able to produce is that his customers like it
What is the best tone anyway?
Could be what I get from the bridge pickup on a lightweight swamp ash tele
Could be sustained mellow notes from a humbucker in the neck position on a Les paul

i understand what your saying, but surely when you look at the challenges facing small businesses, or any business ,they must be able to at the very least, deliver their individual product or service, in able to survive...
And there's no better or worse advertising, than word of mouth, they say....
i think that in a relatively small community of luthiers etc...testemonials would be really worth something...
So, exactly WHO'S opinion counts here...
Edification is a concept embraced by all those amway types as a manipulation-ish tool.
But it is true.
it basically means that you can sell ANYTHNG in the world....except yourself...
No one ever gets up and speaks about how good they are, thats why they have the "big intro", and speakers etc are introfuced and edified....
Now, what else that someone that is offering tonewoods do, but offer happy customers as 3rd party testimonials?
Their opinions dont count either?
gee, the list is getting short...
am i on it, or am i wastung my time? . . lolLast edited by Slapfest; 24th December 2010 at 07:11 AM. Reason: cpt typo

Too true ....heh
Although even that's a tough job, i wouldnt want to be shouldered with.
i think if its one thing we actively demonstrate here, is that its hard to please all the people all the time...
be boring if we all liked the same stuff, really.

Australian wood for electric guitars
Jeff, the reason I also suggest Silver Wattle is because of my meeting with Andrew Morrow who did the tonewood report who recommended it from tests he done, now silver wattle is not a long lived species 40 to 45 years if its lucky, silver wattle is an Acacia same as blackwood.
As for comments that I am receiving in the thread I don't have to prove anything, I stand by my word and the words of my customers.
So if I am wrong they are all wrong.
Cheers to all, Bob

exactly bob....your satisfied customers that have built some awesome guitars
from your wood, should be the end of it....
But i know from having chatted at length to you previously,
a lot of our ideas were along the same lines,
and really, guys, this is a man thats using his ear, his years of experience,
and we havent even paid or shipped my order yet, or built a any basses with it
but i'm quite excited to get it, because I KNOW
he knows what he's talking about.....
Now, i'm new, and its going to be tough enough for me to get the fine woodworking skills to the level i require, BUT
i want someone that knows THEIR stuff, looking after resaw and selection, please.
and i like to think i'm a pretty open minded person, so i usually relish the chance to try and learn from other experienced people's wisdom and opinions.....
its a team effort...

G'day Bob, I understand you don't have to prove anything, what I was saying was that it is in your best interest to prove it. It is easy to make the claim but demonstrating it in reality is when it becomes sound advertising and not hype.
Jim
Edit. Nice guitar Jeff. I hadn't realised you were a collector of fine old things.
Edit again, changed the word "is" to "in" sorry if my typo confused it

Australian wood for Electric guitars
G'Day Jim,
Top of the morning to you.
I will first of all say I have no disrespect or ill feelings to you or anyone else in this forum and we are all entitled to our own views.
And and you say it is up to me to prove the point of the comments that I make so hopefully next year I can prove this some how that old growth wood has better tone than young growth but please see my other comments my other reasons why I support old growth wood.
Luthiers world wide only use a very small percent of the worlds wood supply.
I do listen to what my customers say and supply what they require and I will still stand by my words, so till I have prove other wise.
My best wishes Jim for the New Year once again, and it is good to have you here in this great forum.
Cheers, Bob

That is true, marketing is marketing,
it basically means that you can sell ANYTHNG in the world....except yourself...
am i on it, or am i wastung my time? . . lol
My final word is to refer you to Benedetto's famous lumberyard pine guitar (#29293) Guitars Made from Crap Woods | Guitarbalooga The fact remains that we all like nice timber as do some customers. But its not the be all and end all of lutherie.Last edited by Sebastiaan56; 24th December 2010 at 03:24 PM. Reason: typo
