Have a look at this link not because it is selling something but because of what it is selling,,,, very pertinant to the tone wood debate In Bob Taylor's view.
I had seen this guitar a few years ago on the net but not for sale GEE

Does that mean I'm sitting pretty, as where I work used to be a C.H.E.P. depot. we have lots of top grade tone pallet woods probably 2 >3 tonnes of the raw un palleted (used) pallet wood , they used to remake CHEP's here (you know the white ones, they are remakes & chep sell them) as well as the pretty blue ones (which are hire only). & i have a huge supply of the used nails lining the roof of my warehouse,,,,,,,where the diligent employies of CHEP used to shoot their nail guns into the sarking under the roof, to my amazement none of the nails actually penetrated the roof just turned & got stuck in the sarking thousands & thousands of them LOL

Australian Timbers Suitable as Tone Woods
Well I am back again, the reason I first started this thread was to find out what Australian timbers are suitable for tone woods and that is all musical instruments all parts of the guitar and all sting instruments this also includes flutes, I am working close with forestry Tasmania, Sawmills Etc, Well known luthiers, and some well known guitar companys. My goal to value add tasmanian species and create employment and if there is others on the mainland that are dealing in mainland species suitable for music instruments I would like to hear from you with the goal of creating a co-op we could on work together. Might be impossible but its worth a try.
I note allot of posts where guys are after neck woods and buy from overseas. It would be great if all parts of the instrument were made here in Australia, so any thoughs you guys and girls have idea Etc would help.
Cheers Bob. http://www.tasmaniantonewoods.com

I would have a meter of that pallet wood at that price especially if it is American oak and such a fine piece of pine as seen in that link Richard added. Make that two meters please.
The whole thing about Australian woods used in instrument building is a bit odd to me. My first guitar built 16 years ago used Blackwood in the back and sides, N.T. ironwood fret board and bridge, W.R. Cedar soundboard and Honduras Mahogany neck. Since that time I have continued to buy woods from Australia and over seas.
Bob you make the statement "It would be great if all parts of the instrument were made here in Australia". That already happens but I don't see how it is so great or better than having the ability to buy any woods that are not endangered as a species.
It is great to see our hardwood being turned into music rather than paper but I would encourage makers to buy what suits their designs and their way of thinking rather than to buy something just because it is Australian.
One example for me is Rock Maple, I just love the way it looks as a neck. This may be because I have been looking at fenders for a long time and see them as a great looking guitar, it is a bit of a pig really in that is only of medium stability but for me is worth it for its aesthetic value. If there was something from Australia that could give me the same end result then I would most likely buy it, There is not.

Hi Jim, I will send you my banking details tomorrow please direct deposit into my account Aus$24,000 for 2 cubic metres of pallet wood thanks for your business I need more customers like you.
Now as for your comments I totaly agree buy what ever suits your designs. if you like Rock Maple buy it. Rock Maple 750Kg M3 closest species here in tassie Myrtle 705Kg m3 but Leatherwood is even more. Eucalyptus 613 Kg M3 closest in looks to Rock Maple with beautiful figure and fiddleback Available in small amounts so there is other species suitable, so its up to you Jim to use what you like.

How is Tasmanian Myrtle in any way similar to Rock Maple Bob? And Eucalyptus?
I applaud you for promoting Aussie timbers, but there is more to it than just reading weights from a book. You seem to be in a massive rush to see everyone convert over to Tasmanian timbers. It's simply not going to happen over night.

Australian Timbers Suitable as Tone Woods
Hi Perry, I am sure Jim will be back to correct me.
As for Myrle I was only talking about density being close to Rock Maple and some Eucalyptus similar in colour I dont have to read the tassie species out of a book its on my website. And I am not in a massive rush to see everyone convert to Tasmanian Species, I will promote all Australian Timbers. Also I am not a luthier I just spend alot of time with them and I am here to learn. Cheers Bob.
