Appearance is not the only criteria, workability and stability important also.Let me say,Acacia Aulacocarpa(Brown Salwood) from Nth Qld is just as attractive,if not more so,than Tassie Blackwood. It has the most stunning caramel/dark brown banding, and very pronounced fiddleback,as well as being very stable.Mangium and Cincinnata are impressive too !Sorry to say, compared to these,Melonoxylon is a tad average

No problem, will send some photos a.s.a.p.Not putting blackwood down, merely suggesting alternative(s)that are in a class of there own, as well as being more affordable.I do feel melanoxylon is over-rated,by the way,it grows in nth qld as well.

I smell a contradiction in that paragraph.......

I can't see anything over-rated in this melanoxylon figuring.
And this is before clear went on..

If I want Qld maple or Blackwood , I'll use it for it's sonic footprint first and foremost, and lastly beauty.

Mapleman, I am beginning to take offence at your comments blackwood is over rated, please take note of Stu reply, and why is it that some of the top builders around the world are asking for Tasmanian figured blackwood.? and large guitar company's are wanting Tasmanian blackwood. Can you answer that question.
    Cheers, Bob

Stu's guitar looks really classy. What i am saying is that there are Acacia species(as i previously mentioned) that are as good,if not better in appearance. As for the rest of world being clueless, maybe it's because no one has commercially offered these species yet,for sale in the luthier market.Do they know beautifull these timbers are?.Some folk think Qld Maple is over rated, bland etc, dosen't offend me!Will get a few pieces of Brown Salwood thicknessed in the next day or two,so you can see how good it looks. One point to consider is that Brown Salwood is also a pioneer species, which makes the harvesting ethos a little more earth friendly.Again,no offence intended Bob,simply sharing an opinion

Chris, I note your quote earth friendly.
Well for your information all of my figured blackwood comes from standing dead trees.
I will not cut down a live tree full stop, I have also planted thousands of trees over the years, another point to consider is the banner at the top of the forum, I pay for this privilege. That is I sponser the musical instrument forum.
If members of the forum pass on links to other tonewood suppliers this does not bother me it happens all the time competition is Ok. but for you to be promoting your business the way you are, and to say your woods are better than mine.
    To me that is wrong.
    Cheers, Bob

You couldn't make the kind of woods Bob gets his hands on commercially available, to do that would mean it would need to be 1- Common and in plentiful supply, and 2- Cheap, which only something common and readily available can be.

Firstly i don't sell Acacia species, but i have milled quite a few and happy to tell the world which one's are stunning..Simply putting an alternative out there for the benefit of the luthier(s).My earth friendly comment wasn't directed at you personally,,so no need to be defensive.Never did i say that my woods are better than yours either. I specialize in Qld Maple, Bob,it's my timber of choice. To me ,your response was wrong. All the best

Well maybe I read your post wrong Chris.
Lets just forget it and move on.
We are all defensive of our business.
I note Queensland maple is your timber of choice if you lived in Tasmania, Blackwood would be your timber of choice.
And if I lived in Queensland I would be salvaging maple.
    Cheers, Bob

Good one Peter, I like that.
