    Default Benedetto Archtop build

Hello to all of my fellow builders of all things musical and wood. I am starting build of a Benedetto archtop guitar and I am wondering if anyone in South East Queensland has made one of these guitars?
I have the book by Robert Benedetto and would happily take any advice on streamlining the process or a heads up on any pitfalls I may come across.

    Cheers Steve

What timbers have you selected Steve? I know a few people that have built them.
I have made an Archtop, and have begun shaping a Benedetto. I have been lucky to have been able to borrow a set of templates for back and top copied from the book. The drawings in the book are not great. I also have the book and video, as well as a plywood body mold for placing the the ribs into after bending, for glueing kerfing and top.
I have been shaping using a safeT plane in a drill press as I did with the previous Archtop.
    Cheers Mike

    Hi Steve,

I have also started an archtop out of the Benedetto books. It is way more fun than I thought. I started with hand shaping the top and then using a drill press with a post mount to start the inside shaping. I then finished it by hand (small planes and scrapers). The back was more work. I used QLD Maple form a big slice of a tree I had. I drew contour lines similar to the book but as I am not having a cutaway worked out my own shape. Then I used the safety plane in a drill press for the bulk removal, and finished by hand again. I then used the drill press with the post to remove most of the inside and then finished by hand again. It's lots of hard work but really rewarding. Check out the pics.
