That is one fine looking fixture you`ve built for radiusing the fret board, I was wondering if a router could be used to do that after the fret slots are cut. I`ve been doing mine with a sanding beam because I was afraid of tearout if I tried it with a router. Have you had any trouble with tearout on your boards? Mike

Hi Mike , I can't lay claim to that fine looking fixture, it was built by my friend Ralph from DiQuattro Guitars, he used plans to build it from StewMacs I think.
I had no problems with tear out and apparently he always does his radius after cutting the fret slots, the domed router bit may be the secret. The job's all over in about 5 minuets then sand with a radius block.
regards to all

inlays
Hi all, it's been a while but I started making inlays today, one down eight to go.
Why didn't some any one tell me it was so hard and time consuming ?
Now I know why they are proudly posted builders .

Probably not Stu, do you think I should update my avatar photo?
Andrew, I sanded the shell flat with my belt sander mounted in a vice after roughly cutting the size I wanted on my little band saw, I sanded the two straight ends with the sander and then used a sanding drum on my drill press for the sides.<style type="text/css">p { margin-bottom: 0.25cm; line- 120%; }</style> Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. Hi Greg, Nothing special about the blade, I think most blades are designed as multi use.
I purchased 2 new blades for it, one is a narrow pattern blade and the other a little bigger. I used the latter.
The blade manufacturer that I got them from said the blade can cut mild steel so aluminium isn't a problem.
Post 166 shows how I cut a slot in a lump of wood and then clamped it behind the blade to gage the depth of the slots in the template evenly.
regards

Inlay practice
Hey guys, I've been doing a bit of Inlay insertion practice with my newly constructed dremel router attachment, it works quite well for a home made one .
I have a question regarding routing the inlay cavity's for such wide inlays as an LP.
Should I rout the cavity's following the radius and then radius the bottom of the inlay to fit?
Or should I rout the cavity flat and then radius the top edges of the inlay with a radius block?
Here are a couple of pics of the practice run.<style type="text/css">p { margin-bottom: 0.25cm; line- 120%; }</style> Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. Abert_Einstein.

Wally, Route a flat cavity then inlay and radius your board. ( and make sure you don't sand the sides off your inlay while sanding in your radius ).
Check out this forum for all thing Les Paul - there's a wealth of info on there
Cheers

Ok,so because the fret board already has a radius I'll need to make a jig to do a flat cavity, correct?
And make the inlay thick enough so that when I take the edges of the inlay down they'll follow the shape of the board, yeah?<style type="text/css">p { margin-bottom: 0.25cm; line- 120%; }</style> Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
