First build - Music man style 4+2 tuner
Hi all,
I have quite often looked at this site for inspiration and have had no shortage of ideas for jigs and build options from some obviously very experienced builders. I just built my first solid body and had lots of fun and lots of moments of why the heck did I just do that. All fixable fortunately after some swearing and frustration. I thought for my first post I would just put some pics up and show the finished product. It's a pretty simple no frills guitar with a body shape and headstock that's very loosley based on the music man BFR petrucci model, however I will get more creative next build.
This was a bit of a test bed if anything and I liked the 4+2 tuner concept. The pickups were salvaged from an old Yamaha. In hindsight I would change many things however it has a nice low action, has a very warm sound and the setup was rather easy so overall I can't complain. The neck is hard rock maple with a rosewood fretboard and the body is New Guinea Rosewood. The body is quite heavy although it's reasonably well balanced....ok onto the next..
cheers

Man that neck is really set in, it aint moving.
My first was not that long ago and i too made some strange judgments but, i think when you have the capability to turn it around and make comebacks, it makes you better for it next time. I changed my mind dozens of time during. Youve done a awesome job though.. Just imagine the next, it will be 50% better. Good planning is the key and try and stick to it.
Thats a nice tidy job. What did you use for the finish?

Thanks for the feedback Greg. I gave myself plenty of room with the neck pocket so that I could gradually fit the neck so it is a pretty tight fit. As for the finish it's very basic. I used a festool sander to 4000 grit and then put a couple of layers of Carnauba and bees wax on the body and then buffed each coat. The neck was the same sanding routine (which almost seals the wood anyway) with an orange oil finish to fretboard etc. I personally like to keep the wood fairly natural although I might try a basic Danish oil finish next. Dings and dents will inevitably show up however I can take them out pretty easily and will give it a top up every now and then.
