if you have spray equipment this is 5 drops of 'golden teak' stain in a cup of lacquer over a white base.to me it gives that bang on aged butterscotch look without messing around with drops of yellow red & brown

less drops will give a paler finish but if you want the lighter more yellowish blonde guitaraust.com sells yellow aniline dye you can mix with lacquer.

or are you after spraycans like reranch in the usa?

some testing on scrap bodies (ash & alder) for a 1 shot lighter blonde

1 teaspoon of olympic white acrylic lacquer into 250ml of stylewood with some teak stain

that's a knockout!

Hi,
Im looking for that exact finish but I am a noob when it comes to paint and lacquer as ive been using aerosol cans all these while.
You stated 250ml of stylewood, what exactly is this and could I get is from bunnings?
Ive got a spray gun lying in the garage that ive never used before, but would a finish like that be possible with an airbrush as it would be easier to handle for me.

LERLO: My advice: You're better off not trying to paint a whole guitar with an airbrush. A full sized gun or a touch up gun are perfect, an airbrush will only enhance the opportunity to make it look horrible, aka train tracks etc in it.

I airbrush graphics on guitars and paint guitars often, but I'd never attempt to paint a whole guitar with a airbrush. Click the link in my sig you'll see what I mean. Theres plenty of painting pics in the various folders.

thanks for the info. Yeah, a friend of mine warned me about streaks with an airbrush, guess you confirmed it. Guess Ill be using the spray gun then.

I just got myself some dulux waterbased acrylic, recommended by the Bunnings guy,which I can thin with water. Ill see how it goes.

I think you'd do well to get a copy of 'Guitar Finishing, Step-By-Step' from Stewart MacDonald. There's a couple of recipes for blondes. And many other colour/finish techniques too.

the real butterscotch is a semi transparent finish and not that easy to do if you never used a gun before - you should to use guitar lacquer which will level and buff out well

- you can use acrylic paints [dulux etc] to colour waterbase guitar lacquer - you then shoot wb clear over it - you can shoot clear over acrylic paints

you got a bit of research and testing to do before you attempt a guitar

Thanks for the tips guys.
I actually returned the dulux waterbased paint as it couldnt work with the watson feast stains I had. Got myself some cabots stain and varnish, mixed a little golden teak and amber into it and got the shade i wanted. Tested it on some scrap wood and the finish sprayed on real well. Took awhile to dry but the finish dried hard and glossy ready for sanding in 24hrs. ill post some pictures once its on the body

Although I'm not familiar with the product u used, I wouldn't sand 24 hrs after applying. Guitars need to be cured properly otherwise they'll end up with lots of dings and marks.

I finished a Tele in clear poly that was left to dry 3 weeks before sand and buff, and then hung for another 2 weeks. It was on the bench for prob 45 mins while I assembled and wired it and when I picked it up, there were marks in the finish.

I would leave it a few weeks to cure if I was you

a touchup spray gun can be had for about 30 bucks from here or there.smaller in design easier to handle i guess than a full-size gun but an airbrush won't really give you the coverage.you want the fan width of your spray to cover the body in one pass ... at least i do.
