Default Buying Fretwire

I'm interested in where you guys get your fretwire from and if you think it's good value.

I read in other forums (mainly from guys in the States) that fretwaire is cheap....maybe in their neck of the woods!

I'm on the Gold Coast and get mine from a couple of local Luthier-Repairers and it aint cheap. I'm looking at about $30 per neck.
I could get it from overseas at a better price and pay freight and end up paying the same as I do now.

Does anyone know of local suppliers that sell it at a reasonable price?

Cheers...Wayne

Well I get Dunlop mandolin and banjo wire from Better Music in Canberra, has never been a problem. The mandolin wire I buy by the roll, but the banjo wire only comes in the little packages.

Hi Wayne,

Ive purchased from ost of the local suppliers and found it much of a muchness when you get to comparing with bringing it in. The only exception is when you get a bunch of blokes together and buy in bulk. There is money to be saved then. But someone has to organise, everyone has to front the cash, pay bank fees etc and if you costed out all of that its probably 9/10th' of fa difference.

Like tuners its a cost of the hobby. Strings you can save real money on.....

I'll second Jeffhigh.
I've bought fretwire from Australian Luthier Supplies in Qld for my last 3 guitars. I even get them to bend the wire (60cents a piece because as you know I'm soooo Lazzzy).
Include this with some other items you may need and the postage evens out.
Bent wire at 2.65 per foot plus postage. Cheap enough for me. Less than $30 per neck I'd reckon.

Where do you get your strings from?

Once you have a few builds ... and kids that like to freshen up their strings fairly regularly ... the cost of strings starts to add up

Thanks Sebastiaan and Floody.

I saw a site in the UK with great prices on strings and I was going to buy up. I'll check this one out.

I have spoken to these guys and their fretwire prices are more than acceptable.
They just happen to be about 10k's from my place but they don't have a shop front and won't let me drop in and pick it up. Even with postage it still works out a bit cheaper then Stew Mac with shipping.

As far as strings go, I have been buying mine for years from Pure Tone in S.A.
5 bucks a set (10 sets i think) 10-46 and free postage anywhere in Oz. They even have a line of reasonably priced guitar parts. I had a problem with one of their Tele neck pickups once and thay shipped another overnight with a return post paid bag to send the other pickup back.
Friendly guys and great service.

cheers...Wayne
