cracked brace..what to do?
Just as i finished fine tuning my top I look and low and behold the upper transverse graft has a hairline split about 3/4" long at one end of the brace.
It goes through the 2.5 -3mm thickness of the graft.
Should I take it off and make another or could I just run some titebond into it.
I don't think its fluctuation in RH since the rooms pretty constant..
maybe to do with the fact i bandsawed the bracing instead of split..
or maybe when carving the bracing i should have had the face in the dish to help with stress on the face by carving on the benchtop.
what to do?
what do you guys think
cheers thanks for the help

Grant,
Are you talking about the graft or the brace? Theyre two different things. I assume its the brace youre talking about.
Youve got two choices:
1. get some titebond into the crack and then clamp it up. It shouldnt affect structural integrity of the brace and its not going to be a very visible repair.
2. If youre really an*l like me just grab your trusty chisel and whack the brace off and fit in a new one. Even if a repair job is invisible to the player..I know its there and it'll bug me for the rest of my life.

martin,
I was talking about the graft... and I did decide to replace it ..but probably would have been no drama as a repair but I'd be sticking a mirror in the soundhole to have a look every couple of days for the rest of my life...so peace of mind.
cheers.

Peace of mind is what it's all about. As much as I love my guitars, once they leave the workshop I dont want to see them ever again.
