I think it is one thing to know what a good dread/ and or any model can sound like given all the planets lining up for the particular instrument during the building process.
But it is another thing altogether knowing the properties that go into building a very good one myself .
and
Only through building them and documenting the information and changing specs and building more of the same would one get a full understanding of the mechanics of what goes into producing a good one.Last edited by gratay; 7th September 2008 at 08:32 PM. Reason: add

Yes the thread did start with a simple request for info on building a cutaway. I responded with concerns that it might not be a good choice for a second build. I havent been lurking around this forum much of late and I may have missed it but I dont recall seeing any progress pics of your first build.
If youre dead set on building that cutaway then dont let me stop you...just prepared for some challenges. One challenge will be how good you are at bending wood into tight curves.
When asked for information on guitar building I always direct people to the GAL Red Book series..its the nearest thing to an Encylopedia of Luthiery. The full set of four books (so far) will set you back around $200 but IMO its money well spent.

Well that is a bit of a story Firstly we had the stockmarket crash which had more that a small effect on my finances. Meaning my guitar making is on a severe budget. Then my digital camera died and I cant replace so only camera I have is my phone hence what no progress pics.
Progress has been made Tas Myrtle Back is cutout and braced but one of the two sides came out of the thicknesser in 1500 pieces so am now using some Tas blackwood 2.7mm sides as yet unbent but have been practicing with the now redundent Myrtle side piece. Am waiting on a friend supplying be with another piece of Stainles pipe of the correct diameter before bending the blackwood sided.
3 piece WRC soundboard is thicknessed jointed and Rosette complete just laying out the bracing pattern this arvo .
Neck blank is dimensioned from 100+ year old QLD MAple and skarf joint cut but not yet rejoined.
Whats the holdup you ask? Money pure and simple Once sides are bent and assembled I dont have the money to do any binding or buy a fingerboard or tuners or bridge or reamer or router bits so am planning the next couple of projects while I wait.
GAL Red Book is on the shopping list along with a number of tools and timber but cant afford at the moment.
Build 2 will be another vanilla 6 string Dread just better (I hope)
Build 3 I hope will be a cutaway
