I guess it has to be on my to do list also since I started this CGB thing. I have mulled over the idea of running a drum on my lathe but the hastle of setting up and taking it off again for each job is holding me back. I am now thinking that one of those very basic GMC lathes may be the base to build a drum sander around.

hey John.....I took maybe a couple of days to build the setup. Will take some pics and post them but it`s pretty similar to quite a few on here and on you tube. Timber frame, solid kitchen laminex table (32mm thick) etc. cheers, Graeme

The video was released only in the last day or so. His design for the Drum Sander that he discusses in the video has some interesting features - in particular, how he addresses the issue of changing the sand paper quickly between different grades. Personally, when I get round to building one next year I'll opt to use steel for better rigidity, less slop in the mechanism, etc. Not sure that I like this guy's use of MDF for the structure, but then he is designing it for woodworkers to build. The main feature I like about the drum sander in this video is that he has combined conveyor belt feed drum sander functionality with a SandFlee style sanding table on top of the drum.

    Regards,

    Roy
looks fairly straight forward to build Roy but for me, I`m taking the advice from many on here and you tube and not having a power feed setup. Just taking the very simple approach here. Have fun building your machine and I look forward to seeing it. cheers, Graeme

    Hi,

For what its worth, the link a few posts ago, regarding the drum sander designed by Pat is the one I built. I actually emailed Pat a few times to discuss pulley ratio speeds on my motor etc.

This is the link to the one I built.

I use it all the time, and love it.'

I have just about finished building it. Had the drum metal lathed today and it spins nicely. My only hiccup now is that I discovered today the shaft on my motor is slightly bent....grrrr. It must have been like this the whole time and now I know why it vibrated a bit. I`ll still use it and see what happens. If too much vibration then may have to buy a new motor. cheers, Graeme PS... will post some pics in the next few days.
