    Default Equipment

    Hi all,
I keen to build an acoustic guitar in the very near future...just finishing off my workshop first.

    see BELOW

Been looking at some equipment investments and figured at the very least I need:
    Band saw
    Drum sander
    Bending iron

I've already got a variety of saws, routers and plans acquired while building my workshop.

    Would appreciate any advice
    Thanks

I would question your word "need" Heytman. See the thread where Manny cut out the body for his axe with a handsaw. https://www.woodworkforums.com/f98/bu...ut-jnr-123818/ Remember that for the bulk of instrument making history hand tools ruled.

Nice shed! what are you thinking of building?

Wow! I appreciate what your saying...but that's pretty hardcore. Even Cumpiano uses a bandsaw.
So there's plenty of info in this forum on bandsaws, but not too much specifically targeted at guitar makeres. Maybe a 14" Hafco or Jet. Any feedback from people that have or have used either these appreciated.

what are you thinking of building?
Too answer your question. Probably small bodied Martin style guitar. 0-18 or something similar.

    Cheers

I am so jealous!! Thats an awesome lookin workshop mate.
While not 'needed', i wouldnt build anutha guitar with out a bandsaw..I made 3 without it and halfway through 2 others with it and the 2 current ones have come together much easier.

You can survive without the drum sander.....if you haven't got a decent router, block plane, bench plane and some good paring chisels then spend the money on same.

My bare bones tool kit for getting started would be as follows:

Bandsaw (if skinned then you can do without this)
    Router or lam trimmer
    Hand Drill and bits
    Block plane
    Bench plane
    3-4 paring chisels
    Water stones
    Japanese saw
    Fret saw
    Tenon Saw
    Go bar deck
    Cabinet scrapers
    A decent straight edge
    A decent ruler
    Set square and/or bevel
    A sympathetic wife/gf

I have a 14" Ryobi ex Bunnies. Its enough for whet I do and how often I do it. One day when I get a real workshop going I'll get something with more balls. For 3-5mm thick backs, sides or necks and tailblocks etc that is plenty.

    Thanks "Seb56".
I've been looking at 14" Hafco and Jet. The Jet's nice but a lot more expensive

I would say the bandsaw is almost the first tool, not easy cutting a 40mm block of wood to shape without it,then if your doing an acoustic guitar lash out and get a bending iron and strap, then build your collection of tools up from there, you can spend thousands really really easily, nice fret saws and presses and Ohh my head hurts when I think how much Ive spent

    Thanks simso!
From what I gather. Most people seem to go with the Ibex.

I looked up the Basato 3...knew nothing about them. According to the specs is only 1hp for what its worth.
But fences look good and nice size table!
    Thanks

I think youll find the 3h is part of the model name. Its actually a 1.1hp bandie. Looks ok for luthery work. Ive got a Carbatec 14" bandie which is ok but Im about to upgrade to 21" machine so I can resaw and cut up mother-in-laws etc.
