They are true rock icons: the Fender Stratocaster and the Gibson Les Paul. These are the electric guitars that have been heard on more popular recordings than any other instruments during the rock era. This is the story of the design and sounds, the people behind the instruments, and the battle for rock and roll supremacy that began more than a half-century ago.

The difference between a Strat and a Les Paul...scale length has alot to do with it.

Me.....I liked the sound of the Strat and went as far as buying myself a white Strat ala Hendrix. The thing ended up needing a fretjob and I couldnt afford the loot for same so I traded it in for a classical guitar.

The Les Paul...Ive never played one so cant say if I like them or not.

It was good but just a quick history thing. Could read most of it on the net somewhere I'd say.

    OK, I've settled down now.

The likelyhood of me learning anything much from a "normal person" doco is pretty slim. The reality of it they probably could spend 45 of the 50 minutes explaining the differences between the guitars is lay-persons terms. Between the bridges, the neck break angle scale length the timber and the designs, there really isn't much else other than some history on Les Paul and Leo Fender.

    Would've been interesting thou...

I am going to get a copy of the Fender book and the Gibson book at some stage, that will probably be more interesting... (although the $100 for them could get a nice top...)

    Hmmmmm
    Cheers!

Personal choice but usually for some good reasons. Strats and Les Pauls have differences which affect sound and how they play. Differing scale lengths is one good example.

when you go to smash a fender ( a good one that is) it has more chance of bouncing off the stage and clubbing you in the face than breaking......

when you go to smash a gibson onstage.... well.... it just falls apart lol...

you see a gibson with a broken neck/headstock every week....

you see a fender with a broken neck/headstock once in a blue moon (or 2 or 3 times a year due to utter stupidity) lol

i dont like gibson at all....
    never have....
fenders just have this whole tough feeling when i pick them up....
where as picking up a gibson is like ummm get it off get it offfffffffff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that being said.... my squire strat is nicer than any fender iv ever picked up.... except my dads tele.... omg my dads tele... when will i inherit that beast!!

Well if this is the Case Andrew B.

It's been a while since smashed a Strat or a Gibson....hang on I'll just run out the back and see if this test works....(picks up guitars....runs out the back...door slams...throws each guitar to see which one bounces or smashes....runs back inside with results...)
mmmm well...it's not good, the Strat bounced sideways, went through the kitchen window and killed the cat...!!!....and the Gibson...well that just smashed the corner of the concrete path, and put a small dent in the body about 6mmx4mmx3mm....I guess this proves one thing...a Strat is more likely to kill your cat...!!!!

Please don't come up with stage diving tests...!!!!
